How difficult is it to replace a hardwired garbage disposal DIY?

Not my image but this is very similar to how mine is wired. I can't find many guides online about replacing the disposal when you've got the armored cable tying into the box like that. Is this something I can DIY after watching some videos or is it something I should call an electrician for?

Why is that thing not plugged into an outlet on a switch. I wouldn't go back like this that's for sure. Wiring a switch and outlet is pretty easy. Then plug the disposal in.

That's what I was thinking when I looked under the cabinet and saw my setup. I don't know why the original owner had it wired to a box like that rather than just having an outlet that's turned on by the switch, but I think that's what I might replace with.

Seeing your nice Klien meter tells me that you know what you are doing. But, the junction box makes me wonder what's going on. The 6 wire nuts make me think that two appliances are hardwired... unusual. You might want to have an electrician sort it out before installing a more useful socket.

Not my pic baw. I can snap one when I get home but I'd bet it's pretty similar to that one I found online.
The post about the EZ connect wire is interesting!

It's only three wires. Black, white, and green. Hard to mess up unless you're color blind.
Make sure you remove the knockout plug on the side.

Super easy. Use screwdriver to leverage off of drain. Don’t forgot to remove blocker for dish washer if you have one. Ask on here if unsure about any step or connection. A real pic, brand and age of old and new disposal would help too.

Its exactly the same as romex, its just metal clad.
Just undo the wire nuts under the disposal and remove/replace disposal.
One of those cables probably goes to a normal switch or air switch. You dont really need to mess with that though.

hopefully this is the case.
The plumbing stands be 10x more difficult than then the wiring part.

I just did this a while back. Its not hard at all, just watch youtube videos. Its as simple as disconnecting the old wires and connecting the new ones. I was going to buy the adapter to make it just a plug in but that was actually more work than just doing the wires. Just make sure the breaker is off obviously.

Whole job is a 3/10 on the DIY difficulty scale

There has to be a switch somewhere for the garbage disposal. All you have to do is turn the switch off and pull the MC cable out of the bottom of the garbage disposal

I is so easy that I did it at my last house, that says a ton about it.

Not hard but I'll tell you two things almost every DIY'er who hasn't done one of these before fricks up: if there is a connection for a dishwasher they don't loop it high enough and they forget to knock out the plug in the dishwasher connection in the disposal itself. That second one gets a lot of "pros" too, I caught that in my inspection of the house my fiancée and I bought a few years ago and again for a client who had hired a contractor for a major remodel of their new house before they moved in. They were lucky the dishwasher could sense the problem and just kept beeping an error warning vs flooding the cabinet.

That looks like a couple of wire nuts sticking out of the bottom. If it is, just a matter of twisting like-colored wires. Be sure to turn the power off first!
If you replace with the same brand of disposal, it will be a hell of a lot simpler, as you won’t have to change the mounting bracket in the bbottom of the sink.

You sure it’s actually armored cable and not just flexible conduit? If it’s flex just use the wire inside or run a new one.
And as others have said, putting an outlet under there is a better permanent installation so you’re not having to turn off the breaker and mess with wiring if the unit needs service or replacement. And connecting that is very simple - white to neutral, black to hot (brass colored screw on the new outlet), and green to ground. Then get a small appliance cable with a plug on the end. Done.

Kill the breaker before you mess with anything. Don’t just turn off the switch
