Has anyone ever used Home Depot for a remodel/renovation? I have an appointment with them to see what it's all about and get some prices next week and just wondering if I'm going to regret using them or not. Looks like they use local contractors. What's been the board's experience with using them? I'd check with Lowes too but it doesn't look like they do actual renovations, only installation services for certain things. I've gotten prices elsewhere before and they were astronomical, I assume Home Depot may be even higher since there's probably an extra fee to go through them but I'll find out soon enough.

Sounds like a gamble. I'd be worried about not having a direct line of contact to anyone. If something goes wrong or you need updates, who are you going to call and how much do they give a shite that its done right?

No experience with them but what’s the benefit of going through HD/Lowes rather than straight to the contractors? Seems like they’d just be a middle man taking a cut

Because going straight to the contractors is impossible. I can't get 99% of them to return calls or show up to appointments. I'm thinking if I go through Home Depot then I'd have better luck since they have a contractual obligation to show up.

Well then, you’re calling the wrong contractors.

There are contractors out there that take pride in their work and their word.

I've called various ones from Baton Rouge to New Orleans. I have to leave voicemails for them all and 99% of them don't call back. The ones who did, didn't show up for the appointment. Sure, I could call the super expensive ones and take out a small mortgage for some new cabinets/countertop, floor, and light fixtures but I'm not doing that. And I refuse to use Acadian Kitchen & Bath again because I got royally fricked with a bathroom remodel done by them. I don't need anything fancy, I just need new stuff.

No experience myself, but I have heard a handful of stories from others. Quality of work will be the luck of the draw. Pricing is comparable, because HD is getting cheaper workers, then adding their price markup; I do not know if it's because of lack of experience, lack of quality, or contractual obligation

No chance I would ever use Home Depot Lowe’s or anything like that. Similar to how home warranty work gets done, they find the cheapest and least experienced workers to do the job. No thanks, not worth the risk.

When we started our renovations, we went to HD with our kitchen layout, which was not changing. As it turned out, we wound up using a kitchen-specific company. Their price was about half of HD’s, which didn’t even include removal of our existing cabinets and counters. Lots of folks use HD and Lowes, just keep in mind they are only the middleman in the process.

i used them for carpet replacement. the crew they sent out was a father and son team and we were very pleased with their work.

I used them years ago at my old house for a floor replacement. Crew sent out was fine and the job they did was fine as well. You are covered by home depot/Lowes should anything be subpar. I've heard of a few stories, where the subcontractors tried to offer additional services off the books(floor leveling etc) so that HD/Lowes wouldn't take their cut. Would be wary as doing work outside of the quoted services wouldn't be backed.

Ultimately I would use them again if I was just doing mostly cosmetic finishes as you stated. If needed nee plumbing, wiring etc etc I would look better for a contractor.

i have 0 problem using their carpet flooring teams as they're just local contractors but probably wouldn't on a bathroom/kitchen remodel.

regarding the earlier poster who said "just go to the contractor," a lot of contractors aren't even taking jobs. full GMs and new builds are steady money with very little interruption for them, and honestly just repeating the same process without having to deal with existing layouts, out of code homes.

when the new build market crashes, sure, but right now it's probably hard to get somebody nailed down.

I wouldn't go through Home Depot.

Call a local lighting/plumbing/cabinet showcase company in the city you live in (ex. Facets in Lafayette (owned by LCR)). Ask the showroom manager or any of the workers there if they could recommend any remodeling contractors.

That's how I got my bathrooms done in Lafayette. They gave me a list of four (mix of general contractors with subs, and guys who do all work themselves).

They are going to send a guy from Max Home, LLC to your house to bid the job. I recently went to HD for a bathroom remodel and that is who they sent. Ultimately, I did not go with them but their price was competitive to what I ended up doing.

Interesting. I almost took a sales job with them a decade ago. I spent the day with one of their sales managers in the field bidding projects and he taught me how to overbid the projects then negotiate when they balked

Shame you are getting the run around on finding a reliable contractor. I had a friend use HD for flooring on one of his rentals and it turned out well.

Iam not much help on the contractor part but I sell appliances. I have been able to beat HD prices and we do offer installation for the appliances. If any of that interests you send me an email on what you are looking for and I can send you some options.

If a contractor is good enough, they aren’t working for HD or Lowe’s.

I used HD for my Kitchen about 10yrs ago. I'am in Tx. though. I did the demo down to the studs, moved and added some electrical and had a buddy put in a new tile floor. Went to HD and picked out cabinets, sink, counter tops and the apliances. They installed the cabinets, sink and countertop. I did the rest. If I remember rt HD gives you a contact person or number to call if any problems. Our cabinet guy decided to not install a oakwood panel on the pantry. We called HD and the made him come back out and fix it. Overall a good experiance except for dates of deliveries/install. HD would say hey your cabinets will arrive on Tue. and the wouldnt get there till Friday. Stuff like that. Good work just slow to get it done. Thats all I got.

That's good to know, thanks. I don't mind (and likely would anyway) doing the demo and I can lay down a new tile floor, I've done plenty of that before. I've never done cabinets though so I don't want to install new cabinets and definitely not a new granite countertop so I'd rather they do that stuff. I can install new light fixtures myself too so really I only need them to install new cabinets, countertop, and remove the existing tile floor. If it's too expensive, I can do the rest myself.

You are thinking like I was. I wanted to do all I could to keep cost down. I have a small kitchen, 10x16 but went with nice stuff. Ended up paying about 20k total. One thing I forgot to mention I would do differant would be to sell a kidney to have someone do the drywall. Frick a drywall install. Good luck.
