Getting ready to build. Had planned for a basement but hit rock while digging and will have to go with a crawlspace (North Georgia). This created a shelf behind our house. The lower flat area you see is where my carport will be and the shelf is about 8' from that. There will be a shop somewhere on the upper flat part in the future. The home is on the negative side of a slope and we initially planned to pour a short retaining wall with a French drain to divert the water coming down the slope. I really don't want a retaining wall, nor do I want to pay the money to have it poured. Anyone here have any ideas of what to do with it? As you can see it's pretty rocky, red slate mainly. I have access to a mini excavator and skid steer. Really at a loss of what I could do besides a wall. Any ideas?

You don't need to pour a retaining wall, you could use stacked stone or boulders.

Yeah, that would look 1000x better and more natural.

You'll still need to worry about water intrusion.
My house's front yard looks flat, but it is still below the road, which is 100 feet away.
Yet, we still get moisture in the basement after hard rains. I haven't fully determined its origin.

Does that type of stone have a specific name? I have a job for some just like that!

The smaller stone I would call "Builders Stone". As for the actual type, not sure. Where I am it could be granbury, milsap, or any 8ther of 30 varieties.
The big boulders could be "Lueters Limestone" boulders but again, there are many varieties

Look into redi rock. Pre cast concrete retaining wall system. Can be made to look however you want.
