The wife being very specific wants to plant some medium sized, evergreen, symmetrical round canopy trees along our fence line and I don’t have a clue.

Any help

We are in Zone 9

Leyland cypress. Fast to grow. Plant them about 8'-10' apart.

I had some that got up to 25' tall. Bases were a good 8' from the trunk.

Drake Elm?

They have some drawbacks like shallow roots though.

ETA: nevermind, not evergreen

Leyland Cypress are notorious for dropping dead, and they grow very quickly. So you may be looking at expensive large tree removal and a resultingly uneven row of trees after sudden death. Just google dead Leyland Cypress and read all about it.

Also, they’re not what I would call a “canopy” tree. More a cone shaped typical Cypress.

Get a chainsaw when you pick these up. You’ll need it.

Not a Leyland Cypress, but I had multiple Thuja arborvitae (Green giant) drop dead on me in a similar manner. I was looking for Leyland alternatives, but I think it's just too hot for these trees here in zone 8/9.

Eagleston Holly
Teddy Bear Magnolia

This climate is way too hot for a Leyland Cypress

East Palatka Holly (Standard)
Eagleston Holly (Standard)

Can be planted anywhere form 8-12' o.c. depending on the amount of privacy desired. My firm uses them often because they hold their shape better than the classic Savannah Holly.

With them being standard it allows you to have under-story planting and they can also look great at night with uplighting.

I agree. We have 6 Leyland Cypress along our back fence. Each about 15 feet tall. They make a great screen.
