I have a TV that we just mounted. Wife wants the outlet moved up behind the TV.

Can I just remove the outlet, replace the outlet with a junction box, then splice the ROMEX into a new outlet box behind the TV.

Seems pretty straightforward but wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything.

I did this. Left the plug at the bottom and tapped into it for the new plug. Real easy just put it on the same stud.

Leave the outlet below when you do this. It won't hurt anything.

It is in the middle of a run of outlets for the room. I don't think I have enough room in the box to fit all of the wires if I used pigtails, so that is why I am nervous to do that.

With the new outlet you should only have 3 wires in the box which should be plenty of room.

to add the new outlet you will need a new box though where you want the outlet.

You need to look for an old construction box, fyi. You won't be able to nail the new box to the stud unless you plan on removing more dry wall.

Punch out one of the upper holes on the current lower box and feed the wire up the the new hole.

It's very easy to do and shouldn't take long.

I tapped off a light switch to put in an outlet in a closet.
Not to difficult, a little PITA with fishing the wires behind the wall, etc. But not off the charts as far as honey do's go.

You might have to go through a fire block. If you have a stud finder you can probably use it to see how high your fire blocks are and see if you have to traverse it.

Leave the outlet. There is a chance you will be able to pull up one wire from the outlet below to terminate in the new outlet.

If you can, tape a length of Romex to the one you are pulling up to connect the two boxes, if that makes sense. That will keep the circuit in tact.

Unfortunately, there is a chance the will will be held in place on the stud with wiring staples.

If the outlet is the end of a run then it will be that much easier, just fish a wire from one box to the other.

And remember to kill the circuit at the panel before you start doing any of this and verify it is off.

Are you going to place something in front of the outlet? If so, one of these kits would work as well..

This.....

I have used this one from Lowes on a couple of TVs with no issues and simple to install.
