I do agree if the yard is small, they're fine enough. But great is a bit of an overstatement imo.

Gas is superior than electric when it comes to performance, that's not an opinion. Your yard is small enough that you're ok with the sacrifice. A fully charged Ryobi will never have the power a gas trimmer does.

To an extent . The 40v literally cannot handle the entirety of my yard.

Not this neighborhood or the many like them. I don't live out in the sticks on some farm

Power, not necessarily performance.

If you need power, than gas will provide better performance. If you don't need that power or run time, electric may orovide better performance.

An open ditch is seriously one of the only things I can imagine needing a gas trimmer for anymore, but that's a good call nonethe.

I find myself cutting the yard more often with the electric mower out of sheer enjoyment. It's ready to go right away, so I can jump outside and make a pass in sub 30 minutes.

This is true - I’ve done the same a time or two.
Passing my electric mower over the yard is oddly enjoyable.

I don’t know about small mower motor versus what’s available on electric. But you do realize that electric motors dramatically surpass gas and diesel for power and torque, right?

Not in this application it doesn't.

Possibly, I have no idea how far Ryobi plans to push the battery powered lawn mower option but I've heard that DeWalt is planning a 60v Flex volt lawnmower which will provide much more torque and power.

Battery powered lawn devices are really just starting to take off, they'll only get better IMO.

I understand that But if the batteries that were necessary were used an electric mower or trimmer could offer much more power and torque than gas ever could

So I’m curious about these new 60 V push mowers for just under $400

You could get 2 gas mowers for the price of one electric mower. How is it more cost effective to buy an electric mower that will sit unused vs a gas mower that will sit unused?

A $200 gas mower is not really a mower. It’s exercise equipment for your lats.

What?

Power is only one part of the performance of a trimmer. That's not exactly earth shattering.

Reel mower is less than $100, can sit forever with no maintenance and looks better than a gas mower cut lawn.

Good point. Bought one when I got my own place after college. Had a tree that dropped sticks. Returned the reel mower after one cut.

It would be awesome for a treeless yard.

Just bought the 40V weed eater and blower. The weed eater is powerful. When my gas mower gets retired I will purchase the one in your picture. My neighbor got them a few months ago and swears by all three. No more 50ft electric cords.

I got the

Greenworks Pro 60-volt Brushless Lithium Ion 21-in Self-Propelled Cordless Electric Lawn Mower (Battery Included)

For $399 and really like it. Self propel makes it a breeze and it lasts plenty long enough for my yard

The lack of standardization on batteries is maddening. In many cases, where it's the same voltage and factory, it's only the connectors that are slightly different, preventing interoperability. For example, the Greenworks 80v, Kobalt 80v, and the Snapper/B&S 82v all appear to share design and parts.

Anyway, my next lawn care purchase will be a string trimmer, but I'd like to plan to get a push mower as well. I'm deciding between the Kobalt 80v and Ego 56v platforms, and whether or not to let the future mower purchase affect the string trimmer choice. The Ego 56v string trimmer is probably the best on the market but their push mower is under-powered. :(

Those snapper 82v's look like a good deal and it's definitely on my radar. I think Snapper will be well positioned in the battery powered riding mower game as they retrofit their RER. Those won't use the same batteries as trimmers and other power tools though.
