has anyone converted their old generator to use nat gas?
my dad has a 5500w generator and he doesnt want to keep buying gas for it when its needed.
rather than buying an expensive whole house generator, i want to convert his, which is only a couple of years old and is still like new, to use natural gas.
has anyone done this, and do you have any recommendations?
TIA

Yes, many people have done it here. It was a super popular topic right after Ida.
There’s a few places you can buy the kits. I bought mine from PNGTech because they had a model specific step by step video.

I bought a kit from US Carbureation

I bought a kit but supposedly it needs a huge line. My meter is just in an inconvenient spot unless I hooked it to a smaller line like a branch from my dryer.

This. I installed the conversion kit myself. If I can do it, so can you - believe me. And note correct spelling of carburetion in URL below.

after watching the videos, i went with the uscarburetion snorkel kit LINK
they have a thin gas supply spacer that is just 1/8" thick so there is no thread extensions or box sticking out to hit the frame.
it looks easy enough to do, almost too easy

I have the US Carburation kit on my 5500 and run it just fine from my dryer gas line. Install a T fitting and a valve. Just can’t run them both at the same time.

There are kits out there that work great, but for typical engine sizes for 5500 watt gens there are also tie-fuel replacement carbs available. Instead of adding a whole kit to your current carb you just replace the whole carb and it’s all built in.

yes, i bought the kit from us carburetor for a old troy build 5500. it was super easy. I'd recommend a longer than needed fuel line as well.

For Gustav, I bought a generator in Shreverport and had a natural gas carburetor overnighted to me, installed it the next morning and was back at my house in Raceland that night with a natural gas generator running all my lights.
It was an easy process. I bought thr kit that makes it natural gas only, but if I had to do it again i would go the dual fuel route.

Depending on the make/model of the generator you can just add a $30 carb off of amazon. Worked on a Generac I set up for my parents.
