Spring snapped on the garage door opener. Who’s reliable in BR for fixing garage door openers? Would consider replacing the opener itself as well as this one is an old chain-driven one. Any good recommendations on a service provider and potentially a new opener? Or at least the best type of opener these days?

Also- any trick to getting a double door open manually? I released the emergency/manual locking mechanism. Is it just a matter of manpower/muscle from there? Seems much heavier than I thought it would be.

I wouldn't raise it unless you absolutely had to without the spring.

Overhead door company did our commercial doors and were always reliable when I used them but it has been a few years since I needed them.

Well, my car is currently being held hostage. I mean maybe we can get by the next couple days but it will be a pain.

That is the way to do it, just had a spring replaced. Yes, it is a lot heavier than I thought it would be.

Just get more than one quote before agreeing to service. We did the same and got numbers all over the map.

The guy I used is no longer doing it.

Make sure it's not bound anywhere but it should open easily. You may just need some momentum to get it started.

Make sure the electric opener is traveling when you press the button ie the release is fully disengaged.

If you can’t get with muscle you might try 2 ratchet straps until enough weight is horizontal that you can lift it. Go slow and keep it even.

If only one spring is broken, you should be able to pull up on the door to assist the one spring that is still in-tact. I wouldn’t suggest doing this a bunch but this is how I was able to get my car out before I changed the spring. But if your door only has one spring this won’t be possible.

EDIT: To clarify, I’m saying you push the button and then physically walk up to the door and pull up on the crossbars as it opens. If you stop pulling up the motor will likely stop the door so you’ll need to pull up on it all the way open.

As for changing the spring, it’s not all that difficult if you take your time and are mechanically-inclined. But if you have any doubts about your ability to do it I’d call a pro.

Update- DoorTech is coming Monday (due to Thanksgiving had to wait a bit). I also got a recommendation for them from a family member.

Was able to get the door open and get my car out so there’s no huge rush to get it fixed immediately.

We’ve used Precision Overhead Doors 225-953-6266 and have been pleased.
