Recently built a CNC machine that lives in my garage, and it’s absolutely miserable sitting in there working during summer, so I’m exploring options for some type of cooling in there.

Garage is maybe 350sqft. Ceiling walls and door aren’t insulated. No windows so that rules out a window unit I guess.

Is a mini split my best option? Really trying not to spend a lot of money, but I have a feeling that’s going to be tough.

Also, will I really need to insulate the walls, ceiling, garage door if I’m only going to be cooling it for 6-8 hours a day on weekends only? Not trying to keep it cool 24/7, just want it to be somewhat cool while I’m working in there. Even if I could just get it down to like 78 degrees I’d be happy. Tried a few box fans, but that’s not doing the trick.

What are my options?

I would try one of the portable units before a mini-split. A little smaller than a mini-fridge, but most of them need some sort of venting, so that might not work. You'd need something like a dryer vent to the outside to hook the vent to, but if you can cut a hole in an exterior wall, it would work.

I agree with this. Size is a bit small to waste on the cost of a split unit. You're cutting holes through the wall anyway for the split unit.

Baton Rouge. I’ll look into what was described in first response.

I saw those evaporative “swamp” coolers but those seem like they would be a pain in the arse and not work all that well.

My son-in-law just bought one of those ice chests that have a fan. I haven't asked how it is working.

I would have suggested a portable AC that vents thru a window, but I was not asked.

Ricks the guy that handles all the CNC machines in this area. He’s the repair guy, handles all the parts. What about Cam Motion? They have a number of CNC machines.

9000 btu cool only no heat
Cooper & Hunter mini. Need power at outside unit.

Inside unit gets its power from comm cable from outside

If insulated, a 6000 would likely get it done

I built my CNC from scratch

Few picts from when I was setting it up a few months ago..

It’s nothing crazy, just a little 2ftx4ft for cutting acrylic and HDPE because I do a lot of electrical work on offshore boats on the side. Gives me the ability to cut any custom switch or breaker panel I need.

So I didn’t really deal with anyone to get it set up. Designed it all myself. I will be getting a larger Laguna CNC in the near future though once I get a few things squared away.

Power isn’t an issue. Unit will actually be on garage wall pretty much right next to breaker panel. I can get power there easily. May end up just doing mini split. I asked my buddy about those portable ones and he said he has had a few and they don’t cool that well.

I’d rather spend more on unit vs insulating. Gonna be a major pain in the arse to insulate garage walls.

That's freaking sweet man. Where did you source all of your components and what cad program do you run?

I'm wanting to build a metal cnc machine once I get a shop built.

I used aluminum extrusion with T slots for frame. Got all that from automation direct. Rails and ball screws from some other automation website. Most of electronics and other stuff were from Amazon. 3D printed a lot of the brackets and other various parts.

I’m an electrical engineer so the programming and wiring was easy.

I use fusion360 for modeling 3D stuff for 3D cuts. For 2D stuff I use Autocad2018 since I have it on my work laptop.

May make a thread about the build if there are some other CNC enthusiasts on this board.

Not trying to thread hijack, but I have the exact same question for a 30x40x14 pole barn. It's got 3 roll up doors that are uninsulated, the building itself has that thin standard insulation for that style of building (not sure what its called). Is there any chance of putting something in there that could moderately cool it down in the summer when i'm in there on weekends or am i pissing in the wind due to the volume of space?

ETA: also i'm a bit jelly and want a CNC

I took cnc at delgado in 1985.

Remember G codes, setting xyz axis.

portable units

these are great for filling up landfills, not much else.

I'd try a Mr cool minisplit. They aren't that expensive. If it wont' keep up I'd look into insulating the ceiling. It will be radiating heat down like a m'fer if the sun is shining on the roof. Air sealing any major air leaks would be important too esp as far as humidity control.

Yea. They're fantastic for single rooms. I just put one in at my old man's house. Nothing to it and it's a great little gizmo. Completely silent and cools it's arse off.
