Over the weekend I hung a 47 ton chandelier from a 12.5' ceiling where there were so many issues with the box that I might as well have had sex with the ceiling as much time as my face was plastered to it. I won't cite all the issues except to say that you have to get very fricking creative sometimes to make things work.
I followed that up spending over an hour connecting a dimmer for it (too bright the wife says) messing around with the 3 gang box where i was having to put in 2 blanks (1 switch used to control the top outlet of plugs on that wall and the other was never used at all) and i made the mistake of capping all the wires before i came back to install the dimmer and forgot which was which.
Of course the fun did not end there; because we are painting the house I removed the 2 fixtures on either side of the front door only to discover the 2 boxes they installed were from like 1940s Russia and absolutely nothing would fit them so I spent 2 hours in home depot rigging up a system involving a vinyl square, shims, drilling holes in the square to mount the metal light plate permanently to it, having to dremel the screws i bought because they ended up being too long, finding out the whole wood-shim-behind-the-plate-to-make-the-existing-box-work was a complete disaster and getting so frustrated I just ran a 3" deck screw into the back of the vinyl plate into the side of the house which actually solved the problem much faster than all the careful planning i did to avoid punching a hole in the side of the house.
All of this while the wife is standing there saying "don't you just need to connect 2 wires?"

I'm glad I'm not the only one that runs into problems when doing simple home renovations.

Hope you grounded the switch and light properly. It will save trouble later when you have to upgrade the switch to some sort of z-wave so the wife can drive it from her phone without having to walk the 3 miles to the new switch you installed.

people have no concept at all how after less then as little as 5 minutes on a ladder holding up a 5 lbs light fixture it feels like 50 lbs
a trick i learned many years ago was twist a solid copper ground wire to it so you can hang it from that while you hook everything up

That's because women can't wrap their minds around all the things that need to be done to do it correctly so it won't fall on their empty heads.

As I hung all the damn fixtures in my house I questioned why these fixture designers don’t make the hanging fixture like a Christmas tree type connection where the center shaft (or some portion of it) has an internal plug/receptacle. Then you can just hang and wire the chain and the small shaft, then hang the heavy arse fixture from it and make one connection.

i feel your pain brother... got to cut a 2x2 hole in the ceiling this weekend because somebody did a bullshite job of attaching a ceiling fan brace 18 years ago
and then i discovered the ceiling/floor joists are too close together to use the expanding fan brace i bought. so i got to do that part the old fashioned way

that 3 mile walk is a bitch and it was a zwave switch which was part of why it took so long to work out the wiring because i had to deal with line, load and neutral and the neutral ended up being red and not white.

EXACTLY!!!!! WHY THE HELL DO WE ALWAYS HAVE TO HINGE THE LIGHT ON SOMETHING TO CAP THE ELECTRICITY AT THE BOX??
how hard would it be to have a connection on the fixture itself that plugs into the end of the chain after you've done all the hard work of connecting everything in the box?
that was my exact beef; i had to do all manner of contortions with that damn chandelier hanging from an open chain link to tie everything off in the box when it would have been so much easier to do the box, ceiling piece and chain, then connect the chandelier afterward.

We installed 2 large hanging pendant fixtures from a cathedral ceiling yesterday...they come with a pair of lanyards to hold the light to the box while making the wire connections. Smart.

This weekend I went to remove the inset panel from two cabinet doors to replace them with some decorative metal/mesh to make a hidden dog kennel in our laundry. Easy project that turned into 4+ hour ordeal because the hole bit broke off flush in the impact driver.
30 minutes of actual wood work...but 3.5 hours in between getting the broken bit out of the chuck.

They make small fixture/man lifts. Places like sunbelt/united rent them out or if your local electrical/lighting supply has one they might just let you use it.
