Never owned more than a brad nailer but I bought one today for a fence build. Turns out either I don’t know what I’m doing (how hard can it possibly be) or it’s a piece of shite. It bends every single nail and none of them go all the way in. I added more air pressure to the compressor but that didn’t fix it. It’s going into treated pine. I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong. Using 2” nails and the nailer takes 2”-3.5” so I don’t think that’s the problem. The nails are the same brand as the nailer. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

Someone help please.

How are the nails bending?

I’m not sure what you mean. They’re bending with around a half inch to 3/4” left to go.

What gauge nailer? Which nailer? Do you have the correct gauge nails?

I'd personally just get some stainless steel screws to attach the pickets and deck screws for the runners. Oh, both with torx drive.

It’s a 21 degree Metabo (hitachi) nailer with 21 gauge 21 degree nails.

Nah, you aren't using 21 gauge nails to build a fence.

Anyway. I'd make sure the compressor is big enough, the airline is big enough (not 1/4", need 3/8") and your gun is clean and lubed. I am pretty sure all the 21 nails fit all the 21 guns but they do have different sizes and connecting styles but I personally don't have that gun to know for sure.

I'd still grab a 1/2" impact and some screws honestly...

A framing nailer is overkill for a fence. That's a heavy gun for light work. But as for your problem, are you limp wristing it?

For a fence?

Yikes.

Fyi, you aren't sinking 21 gauge nails with a framing nailer. Or maybe that explains the bending.

That’s good to know. Thanks. The lowes app recommended those nails for that nailer so I assumed that would be correct. What should I be looking for instead?

FYI — they look like regular nails to me to be honest. They’re the same size I’d choose if I were hammering them manually to be honest. Maybe the app info is wrong and they’re not really 21 gauge? Sorry, I’m apparently an idiot with this stuff .

Edit: this is what I have:

The info has to be wrong. After thinking about it, no way these are 21 gauge nails. I have a Brad nailer for 18 gauge nails that I use for trim work and other minor indoor jobs and these nails are nowhere near as narrow as those. I’m really thinking I either have a shitty nailer or I’m not using it correctly.

:rotflmao:

.113" fall in 11 gauge tolerance range.

21 gauge is like .03"

Metabo is good stuff.

I bet you aren't getting enough air, not enough compressor or using a 1/4" ID hose. The other big possibility is too much resistance in the gun if you are getting enough air.. why a clean and lube would work.

Sounds like you aren't squaring up the nailer with the board.

I’m using it like I use my small brad nailer. I don’t see how it’s possible I’m not squaring it up to the board. I’m gonna get a 3/8” hose later and see if that’s the problem because I am in fact using a 1/4” hose. I filled it up to about 80/90 psi but still didn’t fix it so maybe it’s the hose size like others have suggested.

I just ran a whole bunch of the same nails through my 21 degree framing gun. They run fine, I actually had to turn down the pressure to the gun to around 60 to prevent them from blowing through the plywood all together.

I'd vote you're limp wristing it.

isn't there an adjustment on the gun itself?...
