Just change the filter next time unless you go 10k between oil changes or replace about what you spill out changing the filter.

I always loosen oil filter first before draining the oil. Just to prevent tge exact problem you've encountered.

Wipe the filter and if the wrench slips, wrap a piece of emery paper around the filter then put the wrench over it.
That emery paper tip is a good one - never heard or thought of that before.
And since this thread is 3 pages long, here’s an article written by the owner of my auto service shop in BR on DYI changing oil and oil filters. He has other detailed articles he written on the same topic on his business web page.
How to Change Your Motor Oil

Sorry if this isn't the correct board. The mistake I made was not verifying that I had all the correct tools in hand. I first drained the oil in my truck. Then I went to change the filter, I was able to drain oil from the filter, but I couldn't find my 1/2" socket wrench to turn the tool that fits over the filter to remove it. So I was forced to put new oil back in the car with the old filter still attached.
When I change the filter this weekend will I need to put all new oil back in the truck, or will it be okay with the oil I added on Wednesday?
I only change my filter every OTHER oil change.
So every 20k.
Works great. Filters better.

Why not change it while im there?
Believe it or not, new oil cleans up quite a bit when running through your oil filter. A seasoned filter will filter better than a new one.
Scientifically, an oil filter filters better and better until the exact moment it hits the bypass pressure.
A lot of extreme high rev applications rec changing the filter every other time for that very reason.

Serious question - would a auto manufacturer honor a warranty, or extended warranty claim engine failure or major engine repair where the owner could not show proof of change oil + oil filter at the recommended mileage interval stated in the owner’s manual? I was always under the impression that one better keep their receipts for purchases of oil + oil filters during a autos warranty period if they choose to DYI their oil and filter changes.
Seems like an awful big/potentially expensive risk for a $5 OEM oil filter and an additional 10 min of one’s time to change it by skipping a filter change, unless of course specified in the owners manual.

No.
You need proof. It needs to be at their intervals.
Having said that, unless you have an engine failure in the first 15 to 20 hours of usage, as long as the engine is not overheated and is getting adequate lubrication, why would it fail?
It isn't just the oil changes that you are responsible for, I always laugh at the guys who purchase everything at the dealership and then don't realize they're skipping a solid 50% of the recommended services.

This seems like a good place to put my pro-tip:
My first job in highschool was at oil change place. There were a couple of customers that only wanted to change a filter and not more expensive oil every change. We would take a shop vac and put it over where you fill the oil on crankcase. It would put a vacuum in the engine to not let the oil drain, yet not enough vacuum to suck oil up out the filler. We could change a filter and only lose a few ounces of oil that was in the filter or immediately on top of the filter.
TLDR: Having two people, use a shop vac on oil filler and you can change filter without losing (much) oil

Which is exactly the OPPOSITE of what every oil analysis will tell you as well as simple common sense.

The Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act is what covers this. Basically the dealership can’t make you use them for oil changes and you can do them yourself. They can require reasonable proof that the oil was changed. Typically for a normal consumer receipts are good enough. But reasonable proof can be detailed log books or even an oil life test.
