Sorry if this isn't the correct board. The mistake I made was not verifying that I had all the correct tools in hand. I first drained the oil in my truck. Then I went to change the filter, I was able to drain oil from the filter, but I couldn't find my 1/2" socket wrench to turn the tool that fits over the filter to remove it. So I was forced to put new oil back in the car with the old filter still attached.

When I change the filter this weekend will I need to put all new oil back in the truck, or will it be okay with the oil I added on Wednesday?

Just let your husband do it.

You can change the filter without replacing the oil, but you will lose a fair amount in the process. You’ll need to top it off after replacing the filter. No need to replace all the oil again.

Next time just jab a screwdriver into it and twist.

This is dumb and unhelpful.

As the previous poster said, you can change the filter without replacing all the oil. You'll lose a lot, though, and have to replace what you lose.

Generally speaking, if you stay on top of your oil changes, you don’t NEED to change the filter every time.

I definitely recommend you do, but you wont hurt anything skipping one round.

I’ve had your exact situation happen to me years ago. I just changed the filter the next day and topped off the oil to replace whatever oil I lost in the process. You don’t need to drain the new oil.

I would drain the oil, not that it can't be done but you might have a huge mess on your hands. The filter wrenches like you're using usually have a hex head around where that socket fits. Can use a big wrench.

Know how I know you’ve never changed your own oil? Because it’s nearly impossible to take the filter off by hand after lazy mechanics don’t oil the gasket and then over tighten. Since this is his first time, that thing ain’t coming off by hand.

OP, when you change filter, run some oil with your finger around the rim over the gasket then tighten the filter with your hand. Get it tight, just don’t over tighten.

As others have said, you don't need to change the filter every time you do an oil change. Some manufacturer actually recommend changing the filter every other time.

I would get it on the next one and not think twice about it.

Drain the new oil in a bucket, replace filter, add the oil you just drained back in. Done

How is this possible without jabbing a hole in it or taking it off?

Can you not just grab the filter and turn it with your hands? It shouldnt be that hard.

Pro tip - Loosen the filter with the wrench, then wrap a gallon Ziploc bag or grocery store bag around the filter before unscrewing it.
That will keep it from spilling oil all over the frame and your driveway.

Here's a video on the bag trick:

Good tip, here.
I just always get oil running down my arm.

Changing the oil in a car back way back when, filter was stuck so I ran a screwdriver through it. But it just crumpled when I tried to turn it. Oh shite. What do I do now? I think I took it up to the service station and had them get me out of the jam I put myself in.

Why are you assuming someone didn't torque the shite out of it previously?
