I read where it's not a good idea to put Nitrogen down this late in the season. Would a low Nitrogen fertilizer be ok? The lowest I can find is 8-24-24.

Bruh...you do not need a X-24-24. Get some milorganite and throw it down.

I use 15-0-15 for my centipede in the front. Typically 13-13-13 or 15-0-15 for the St. Aug in the back. Works fine so far. Lowes or Home Depot will have a good variety to choose from.

8-24-24 is a quick release vegetable garden fertilizer and if you put a low dose of nitrogen on your lawn now you would want it to be quick release and not slow release as is most lawn fertilizers. The high potash (potassium, last number) is good and recommended for winterizing lawns. The problem is the high phosphorus (middle number) of the 8-24-24 - lawn fertilizers are low in phosphorus (usually 0, 2, 3 or 5%). A high phosphorus level sequesters iron which is an important element in “greening” your lawn.

Do really feel you need to fertilize your lawn now, does it look OK? I suggest you not fertilize and spend the $ on pre-emergent herbicide for winter weeds. But you can purchase 4 pound bags muriate of potash fertilizer (0–0-60) at most retail plant nurseries or hardware stores and apply 1/2 lb per 1000 sq ft of lawn with a hand spreader. That will physiologically strengthen your grass for winter, but you are not going to see the lawn green up from the application.

Or look for and apply this, kill 2 birds with one stone, fall fertilizer with Dimension pre-emergent herbicide. Most of the nitrogen in this fertilizer is quick release, and only a small amount slow release. Again, look for it at good retail plant nurseries or hardware stores.

This late in the year you want to be nitrogen light and potassium (potash) heavy. I just put out 5 5 25 promate with pre emergent in the Bossier area.
