Exterior Door Refinishing- Baton Rouge area

Have a double entry door that desperately needs to be stripped and re-finished. I did this DIY on my previous home, but this door has a lot of trim work and glass that needs some more detailed attention.
Should I sand and stain/poly, or paint? This door is east facing so catches direct sunlight for the first half of the day.
Anyone have a recommendation?

Really a matter of personal preference.
Paint may be more durable and longer lasting, as well as easier to redo next time.

Preference would be sand and stain a medium natural tone. Like I said it’s a lot of work with all the surrounding trim. Not sure how you get those intricate details without damaging the door and trim.

Whatever you choose to do, please make sure you are using products suitable for exterior use. If you don’t, you’re wasting your time and money.
I’ve seen more exterior doors/wood windows ruined by using the wrong products, generally Minwax stain with a non-spar or interior grade polyurethane.

Agreed. I had a spar varnish on my other door and columns that held up well, but again I don’t want to tackle this myself.

My old high school teacher, now in admin at Walker does it on the side with his son. Very stand up dude.

Mine were pretty bad when I moved into my house. I decided to give it a shot myself and it came out ok. I did it in 2019 and then had it redone in the summer of 2025, so the stain lasted about 5-6 years facing direct sun in the evening. Here’s a before and after.
In summer of 2025 I used Geaux Feaux painting. You can find them on Facebook, they are good but usually booked for like 6 months in advance. They use paint and make it look like wood. They did several houses in my neighborhood over the last few years. It was $775 for both doors. This is before and after.

They make a scraper kit that comes with seral different profiled scrapers that can be adapted to fit most trim styles. It has one handle and several different profiled scraper blades.

That looks great. My front entrance is very similar. $750 isn't bad at all
Did they sand and then paint, or just strip? I like that color a lot.

For mine she did some light sanding. But I think they will do small repairs and stuff too if the door needs it. Like fill small cracks and stuff. So if it needs stripping I think they will do that.

Also, they will replace the seals around the door for a little extra but not the bottom ones. I replaced all the seals myself before they came and did the paint.

I went from stained to faux finish "stained."
Note, stucco has also been repainted to Sherwin-Williams Shoji White (SW 7042) - picture above was taken before stucco was painted. Made a huge difference.
