Discovered a leak in the wall behind my tub faucet

I have a plumber coming out today to look at it. The bad thing is it's behind a ceramic tub surround. Is there anyway to avoid busting out the surround?

Can you get to it from the other side of the wall?

Nope… it backs up to an exterior wall and then the shower

Sure about that? That's kind of unusual.

Yes… here’s a photo.. it’s leaking behind that faucet and the shower is to the right

What side of the house is that on? Would you be opposed to exposing from exterior then adding access panel? (Not sure if code will allow as all of mine are in closets)
Have you tried checking all of the fittings before assuming its something in the wall?

Where do you see water leaking?

What idiot thought putting faucet plumbing in that area was a good idea. It's almost a guarantee that somewhere along the line there's going to be an issue to deal with.
That goes from a job costing maybe a couple hundred dollar to costing a few thousand if you have to break out the inside wall to access it. Probably can't find that style tile any more since they come and go out of fashion every so often.

Have any of those tiles laying around?

What material is your exterior wall? Like mentioned, I'd access it from the outside and put in a access panel once the work is done.

Brick

How are you determining the leak is from the in wall plumbing? Have you considered the possibility of water intrusion from that window directly above the tub fixture?

You can hear it leaking when I turn the main water supply on. The guy that did the remodel is here now looking it at. It appears the butterfly connection for the faucet somehow failed. It must have been miscasted when it was made… said they’ve never seen anything like that before

Ok
Well it appears the surrounding tile and grout are fairly new, so post repair matching should be easier.

Yeah, thankfully Home Depot still stocks it. I checked as soon as I found the leak

Always a good idea to have spares on hand. I learned that the hard way with my livingroom tile.

I'd just cut an access hole through the brick if it were my house. I'd not tear up the surround in the bathroom and have that to deal with.
That way, if there's ever another issue with the plumbing, just open the access panel and be done with it.

Plumber should take that faucet trim off and put nipples in the fittings in the wall and see if the rough in is leaking or the actual nipple connection to the faucet itself. Start simple.

Turns out the “butterfly” connection that connects the pex pipe to the faucet connection somehow failed. Plumber said in all his years he’s never seen one crack in the threads before
