I built a shop approximately 1800 sq. ft. Its a Metal building and fully insulated including the doors. The issue is it feels or hot muggy all the time. Does any one have experience with putting a dehumidifier in the building to make it comfortable to be in there. Recommendation would be helpful. I have a drain across the length of the shed so a continues drain if needed would not be a problem also would a timer be helpful or just set the humidity level

Humidifiers are just A/C's without the cooling function. They heat up your space. I am not a fan.

If it’s 1800 SF, stop calling it a shed.

You’re going to need a pretty fair sized unit (~70 pints) for that size building. Is the shop already conditioned?

Homelabs 4500 sq ft dehumidifier.

I’ve had this in my little shed for 18 months or so, it doesn’t run a whole lot because my area is so tiny but it removes a lot of moisture. I just set the humidity for 50 and it runs to maintain that. It does put out warm air but there’s no way you’d be able to feel a temperature difference in 1800 sq ft.

I was looking at those then as I researched some were pointing to commercial.

I may go residential and if I don't get the life out of it go commercial

Along these lines

all you need for this is several evenly spaced temp controlled exhaust fans to draw out the heated air at the peak and bring in fresh air from ground level air grill intakes

dont overthink it, if you dont want the exhaust fans then you need to add HVAC to the building for humidity control

that would work. Except I had it built with no exhaust. Straight up walls and roof. As you wrote your reply I was actually outside running a big fan from my man door from inside to outside to see what that gets me.

In a similar boat as OP with slight smaller space. It has an HVAC but really don’t see Entergy prices coming down any time soon, and could live with warmer temp if not muggy. It currently will range 70-80% when HVAC hasn’t come on for a bit.

I had a "1500 sf" rated dehumidifier in my insulated 2 car garage before adding a mini split. It reduced humidity from 80's to 50's.... very noticable. Running 24/7 the impact to electric bill was ~$30/mo or so.

You will definitely need a shop fan running to circulate the air.

That’s a good point, a lot of them pull 4-8 amps when running. That could be a fifty cents to three dollars a day depending on energy costs and how often they run.

I bought this one for my Travel trailer yesterday. We ran it in the house last night and it did some serious work. Emptied the bin twice

I use a Santa Fe Classic Dehumidifier and that thing is a tank. Pricey but energy efficient and well built to last.

Well that's something I did not know. How much does you mini split cost to run. I assume you are running the MS with out the dehumidifier. I ask because my house HVAC has a separate dehumidifier running independent of the A/C due to a foam sealed attic

correct

Almost net neutral from a KwH standpoint vs dehumidifier but price per kWh has gone up quite a bit year over year.....So, I'd est $50/mo or so

Anyone aware of any affordable, direct drain (compact) dehumidifiers?

I’d love to mount one in the wall cavityy in my set up
