Tell-Tale Heart?

Dammit Cdawg beat me to it. Amazed with his backwoods Mississippi upbringing he had heard of such a thing.

Turn your water off and run the pressure out in the pipes and see if it goes away...

Ok so I think I've narrowed it down. I have 2 water heaters in the basement. The old unit is 80 gallons but they're no noise coming from that one. The new is 40 and has the fancy expansion pack and lives in the closet beside the sump pump. I hear a click coming from that closet if I'm right beside it then the WHOOM about 1/2 second later from across the room above the drop ceiling.

So not sure what's going on yet but at least I think I'm in the right area.

Turning on the shower or flushing the toliet enables the sump pump normally and I don't hear the noise then but it would be hard to hear over the pump anyway.

I'll have some time this weekend to mess with it.

I was going to ask this. Mine fakes me out all the time. Mr. CT has to have a soundbar and I hate the SOBs.

Yep time it OP. If it’s exactly 10 minutes it’s a toy or electronics. As said turn your water off to your house, if that stops it it’s a water issue.

Sounds like you might have some loose sediment in one or both of the hot water heaters. Drain and flush your hot water heaters and put new anode rods in them.

hot water expansion tank is either bad or non-existant. This can also cause the incoming pressure regulator to fail.

Water Hammer?

This is what I was thinking, as well. Water Hammer or resonance.

To the OP...is the sound like this?

Water Vibration

still chasing this down. i spent most of the weekend outside cutting trees down & bushwacking so i didn't really have a chance to mess with it but it was louder than ever last night.

it doesn't seem to be coming from anywhere remotely close to either water tank and i've checked all the toliets for leaking.

the next step is to kill the water (unfortunately I have to use a T to turn the water off because there's no shutoff in the house) and see if the sound continues.

If you have sheet metal plenum/ducting it could be the sheet metal relaxing after your ac shuts off.

Still no closer to finding this. I sat down in a chair next to the closet housing the sump pump and water heater and at no time did a single sound come from there but I still heard a whoomp from somewhere. Bass thumps are so damn hard to triangulate.

This is driving me nuts. I guess I take the big iron T and go turn the water off tonight and see if that helps.

It's extremely annoying and the house is quiet as shite so I can't figure out how its related to any apppiance, HVAC or h20 heater.

Both water heaters are electric.

When I'm on the main floor it sounds like it's coming from the basement.

When I'm in the basement it sounds like it's coming from the main floor.

I can't seem to find a location where it's list or softer. The damn noise is always just out of reach.

Is that 40 gallon water heater electric, or gas?

Well the update is I think this was staring me in the face the whole time. Looks like my 4yo got behind the subwoofer and turned the knob all the way up. Even though I wasn't running audio though it.. And the tv wasn't even on, somehow it appears the sub may have been the cause.

I turned the power off on the back of the sub and haven't heard the noise since but I've been really busy the last week or so and haven't been downstairs to see if that was really the culprit.

My dumb arse didn't think the sub could be causing this.
