Mowers aren't these high tech computerized gadgetry that need a wizard to maintain. I had a bunch of fed contracts (I'm a vet) and state and business contracts and I only called a dealer if something was WAY out of whack.

And I did all of the maintenance and I'm not a mechanic, just a guy that gives a damn.

ETA--there are enough youtube videos out there for a moron to diagnose and fix 90% of the problems on a mower. That should never sway a buyer that gives a shite about his equipment.

I agree with Wilson Pickett I made a nice living over along time and 90% of my service dept work orders were residential customers.

Something small as pickup, delivery, tracing electrical for a bad switch, carb cleaning/ fuel solenoid switch, or people want parts today.

Homecenter units have a lot more issues even if is the same model. Incorrectly assembled, decks are not level as people keep stepping on them, damaged by the store or customers, battery’s need charging or replaced, water in fuel which I seen blocks seized to the cylinder wall, some need carb cleaning, or they are missing parts as people steal them.

Another vote for Gravely ZTHD. I did a ton of research last year before buying. Scag was my second choice.

I am looking at ZTRs, currently down to exmark and Spartan, the comparable exmark is $2000 more than the spartan and rides rougher. Is the tuff torq 400 and 450 hydros found in the spartan RZs comparable to the hydro gear 2800 - 3100 found in all the other "prosumer" level mowers?

Seconded.

42" Raptor Limited (nicer seat, front suspension wheels, and hourmeter) with the Kawasaki.

Gautreaux's on Airline.

I bought the exmark e series which is light commercial last year and love it. Fast, cuts great, and offers room for taller people. Believe it was right above 5k but great mower so far and good warranty. As someone said. Stay away from box store mowers. They are not the same.

Again, I retired last year.
Might go work for Wilson Pickett if he gets me a chair and I can sit and BS at the counter with customers. Lol!

Tuff torque vs hydro gear.
My feelings are I like hydro gear better.

Really I would look at the size transmission.
Is the weight of the unit sized to the correct transmission.
Too much weight on a transmission will slow it down, build up heat, and reduce the life of the transmission.

Again most expensive part of the unit.
- transmission
- engine
- spindles, pulleys, etc

If I can downsize a transmission to get it past the warranty period and I save money who cares.

I' have a Hustler 42" Mini Fastback. I have not had an issue other than a deck bearing that I replaced last year. I bought it from Gautreaus in 2010. I think the Raptor is the closest to mine. It's an awesome machine.

I'd definitely stay away from buying from a big box store. Go to a local dealer.

I finally broke my devotion to Kubota and bought a Hustler from Gautreaux’s last year. Great experience dealing with them and the mower (Hustler 54” deck commercial grade) has performed flawlessly. Not as heavy or solid as my Kubotas, but they don’t get stuck like the Kubotas either. I’m very impressed with the Hustler machine and Gautreaux’s seemed first class in my dealings with them.
I’d definitely give them a shot regardless.

Since you've owned kubota I'll ask you. Why does kubota have their engines sideways in their commercial units?

I ran a 2008 hustler mini z with a 19 hp Kawasaki and 52” deck for 12 years on 2 acres. Replaced the battery 3 times, the drive belt 7 times(damn gum balls) and the deck belt twice. Awesome machine for $6K. Currently running a scag freedom z with a 24 hp Kohler and 52” deck. Just started my 3rd season on the same 2 acres. No issues yet (knock on wood). I’d definitely buy hustler or scag again. Good luck and hope you pick a good one.

True commercial unit.
Parker transmission typically works little better in this situation.
$10k there are many good brands out there.

I have a lowes John Deere z425 48”, probably 12-15 years old. I cut two acres in less than an hour, it flies. I’ve put it through hell and it’s still a champ. The acreage was very unkept when I started taking care of it and it chopped a lot of shite up. Now I keep it manicured.

I’m not saying don’t go out and spend $5k-$7k on some super commercial heavy duty deal but people like to crap on big box mowers when they work great for 99% of residential applications.

Thanks for the information. I'm leaning towards the Bad Boy Rogue which has the Parker wheel motors

Bumping this to try to get some advice on a solid riding mower (tractor style, not zero turn) for approximately 2 acres of thick lush grass that includes some substantial hills (upstate SC).

I’ve read horror stories about the box store mowers w CVTs on hills and in heat. I just want something reliable that won’t crap out on climbs.
There’s a local trusted lawn and garden shop I’m going to visit tomorrow. I’ll update with their recs.
Thx!
