Crape Myrtles and the snow

Did the snow kill off the crape Myrtle’s? I have 5 in my backyard and still no foliage. Down the street there is a row of about 30 and they are the same. Did the snow kill the crapes or just delay the bloom?

I don't think a nuclear bomb could kill my crape myrtles

Snow doesn't kill plants. Cold does.
If anything, snow might help to insulate plants during periods of extreme cold.
That being said, they should be fine: Crape myrtles are generally cold-hardy in USDA plant hardiness zones 7-10, with some varieties tolerating even colder temperatures in zone 6, and even zone 5 with careful selection and protection

They haven't leafed out in Dallas yet. Scratch the bark off a little area on a small branch. If its green then its fine. If no green, try a larger branch. If you don't find green under the bark anywhere then it may be dead.

Unfortunately the cold didn't kill mine

Why do crepe myrtles always get a bad rap?
I just planted 3 of them; Tonto, Muskogee and black diamond, I think. Anyway dark leaves with red flowers.
Do they clog sewer lines or attack water lines or drop branches all over the place?

The constantly drop leaves, bark, spent flower pods.
The shoot up suckers all over the place. Suckers are nearly forever if you don't get rid of every last piece of root if you remove a tree. The flowers stain purple whatever they fall on.
They are another invasive imported tree.

Thanks for the warning! There was not one tree in the yard when I bought the house so it's nice to know the drawbacks.

Mine in central Mississippi haven’t budded out. However, I have a relative that has some in CenLa that I just noticed buds on them today. We got some major cold in both places, so I think they are okay.

I have 14 crepe myrtles and only two have leaves right now. A few are dead, believe it or not. My weather station showed the low the morning after the snow as 8.9° and I thought they’re hardy enough for that temp but at least a few of mine were not.

They do fine here in DFW and we touch zero quite a bit. Mine still look dead but I cut a few branches off today and they’re green as can be inside.

snow is mostly air which is an excellent insulator. The remainder is frozen water which won’t be colder than 32 degrees.

Snow is cold isn't it?
When it would get down to the lower 20s or teens my paw paw would spray mist on his satsuma tree all night.
The ice that formed actually kept the plant warmer than the air around it. The snow does the same thing.
So yeah, snow is definitely not warm! But it's warmer than the dangerously cold air.

I get it and am mostly just playing around. But when I picked it up, it was darn cold! I didn't want to hold it long.
And yes, I have heard of spraying things down to protect them from freezing.

Just paid to have 5 of the biggest crape Myrtle’s I’ve ever seen cut down. They are hell when trying to keep a pool clean

I have 3 large ones in my front yard, and they usually don't get leaves until April or May.

High maintenance and messy. Generally a good idea to keep them away from pools and right up against your house. They're great if grown in the right spot and maintained well.

They thrive in NOVA and we get snow every year and much colder weather generally so no, the cold there won't hurt tham one bit.
