Interesting. Not to HiJack, but would you mind posting a link to what you are talking about so I can learn more.
Interlocks keep popping up when I put "manual generator switch" in the google machine.
Appreciate it

SqD Homeline Interlock
GE Manual Transfer Switch
Both will switch the utility power off.
They also make these kits.
LINK
You'd remove those circuits from your main panel and put them in this little panel. You'd have to pick what circuits you want though.

We had an electrician out to replace a failed circuit breaker

Yep, I am. I don't screw around with breaker boxes. I pick and choose which projects I'm willing to do as DIY and that's on the 'NO' list. Many are on the 'NO' list because they're not things that I want to fool with (for one reason or another).

Up yours, a-hole!

Seems reasonable. Maybe it's a little high, but material prices are pretty volatile right now. He may be just inflating it a bit to keep from losing his arse if wire prices go up 50% next week. If you ask him, he may tell you that was the high end and he's gonna charge you materials + labor whenever he gets the green light. The cost may end up being less. Also, there's a lot of value in having a good electrician you can call next time something goes wrong that doesn't say "frick that guy he haggled me down $150 on my last job over there."

It isn't my fault you can't fix simple shite and then cry when someone has to do it for you.
EDIT: After seeing how emotional you got, I want to apologize. I should know better than to criticize a woman. Maybe your FIL did a poor job in raising your husband.

You can save a ton of money going with aluminum wire
No way I would use aluminum wire. Unless you constantly make sure your connections are tight they tend to loosen up and build heat up at the connections. You can avoid some of this by using Penetrox on the connections but I still wouldn’t use aluminum. When I installed my equipment I ran 6/4 copper from one end of the house to the other through the attic. Mine is setup too flip off the main breaker in the panel and then I can flip a breaker on where my generator hooks up at my back shed. I did it that way too cut down on some of the noise from the generator when it’s running

Lots of applications use aluminum wire where having a bigger , less flexible wire isn't a problem. Generac started making generator wire from aluminum just for this exact application... I am not saying copper isn't technically better, just that aluminum works for a LOT less money for something that isn't being in full time use.
Sure you are more likely to find aluminum feeds in a trailer park than anywhere else, but it still works and you will hear them A/C's humming all summer long on aluminum feeds.

Not sure where you live but in around the BR area call J Rowe Electric in Denham Springs. I had similar work done by them for a lot less. It was a year ago...but someone else here just had some work done by them also and saved them a good chunk of change.

In the interest of saving money and having a good working generator system......
Is a 50 amp hook up really needed? If soft start is installed on the A/C, how much would this lower required total amp load? What does a soft start cost?
What is the size of the A/C unit (s) on the house?
Just a guess, but maybe 30 amps could run the whole house.
