I had some trees removed recently (Pine, Bradford Pear) from my front yard and need to replace them. There are 2 spots I want to replant. One is about 40-50ft from my house and the other is about 20ft from my house. They will both be full sun especially in the summer. The space near my house needs to be a smaller tree (below 20ft). The other can be bigger but I want to make sure in the future it is not big enough to fall on my house. I want trees with bright colors. The two that I am considering is the Autumn Maple and the Purple Leaf Plum. Another that is a consideration is the Callaway Flowering Crabapple.

Which others should I consider?

Look into Japanese maple.. I stumbled onto these when I bought a house in Tyler texas.. I had a large one in my back yard that turned red and soon discovered there was an entire cult around these trees from dwarf into full size and variety in leaves and color..
They produce a very attractive full growth shape also.

I have a Chinese Tallow in my backyard.

NOT the same as Chinese Pistache.

(for the confused I have a "chicken tree")

I habe only kept it because it is the only source of shade in the backyard.

The main trees I wanted to plant is the Japanese Maple but unfortunately due to the full sun and summer temps they don't do well here in South Louisiana.

I have plenty of shade in my backyard so my plans are to plant a Japanese Maple there.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I will definitely look into them to see if they would be better than the three I have looked into already.

That is good to know .. I was thinking about planting some on my property in br and katy… they are really cool trees.. I had one of the full size ones in my back yard in Tyler and it was large and amazing .. they were introduced to Tyler by my bosses mother .. I lived in they azalea district where they became a cult like azaleas and camellias

I also planted a few Chinese redwoods in Tyler.. they were they size of a pencil when I planted them and were 5-6 feet high when I moved.. they are true redwoods… pretty cool also.

It says fall and winter is the best time to plant these. Would planting them now in the spring be an issue?

Assuming it’s a container tree, you can plant it now, and the sooner the better.

You need need to insure that it’s well watered through the summer and fall of the first year while the root system becomes established, and that doesn’t mean over-watering. One good soaking weekly in the absence of rainfall (1-inch in a week) is sufficient.

Plant at a depth where the top of the rootball is several inches above grade of the lawn if you have poorly draining heavy clay soil, which is common in S LA.

I second the Chinese pistache tree. The purple leaf plums are beautiful, but get destroyed by insects.

They are common trees, I've seen them at Home Depot where I live but any retail nursery should have them or be able to order one for you.

I’m not sure, but Banting's Nursery near the Huey P Long bridge usually has them.

My neighbor has one in his backyard. You can’t help but notice it the first thing you look at the yard.

A neighbor had a weeping willow tree. I always admired it. Was like 15 ft tall.

I went to Clegg's on Sunday and asked for this. They looked at me like I was an absolute idiot. Is this something I have to order online? Is there any place local to Baton Rouge where I can get a couple?
