re: centipede to bermuda plan... (updated with pic 8/11/24)

Additional question about this process (from St Aug to Bermuda)
I found this thread a week or so ago and like the idea. My backyard is in shambles, especially after the drought. A lot of that Aug perished. Nevertheless, and like an idiot, I did the weed and feed for st Aug bonus S about 3 weeks ago. Now I’m wishing I hadn’t. I always had a little bit of naturally occurring Bermuda in the yard but this year, since the st Aug has been struggling, the Bermuda is really taking over.

Given that I’ve stupidly applied this bonus S, is there anything I can do to promote the Bermuda, and can I overseed with it now? Or am I SOL for a while?

I’d say the common Bermuda represents about half of the yard, and in some places, it’s the only grass growing. Other areas you can see it beginning to establish along with what’s left over of the st Aug and other weeds.

There is some spotty yellowing but not everywhere.

I moved in here in 2019. There were two large trees on one half the lawn and the grass was St Aug. Half the yard was full sun and half was full shade. The drought last year demolished the St Aug. I just couldnt keep up with watering it enough. And weeds just took over and choked out a ton of the grass. Also due to the drought, theres old tree roots and stumps that I guess were previously cut and ground up that have started coming to the surface.

I hit the whole yard with celsius a month ago, so all the weeds are dead. and its just grass (st aug and bermuda) and dirt)

I had the two bigs tree cut down a couple weeks ago. So now I've got a full sun yard. But saying the yard is unlevel is an vast understatement. I really need to level the whole thing. And I think its too much to just add masonry sand in the low spots. Theres some bad high spots as well.

So here's what I'm thinking.

-I've got access to a tractor with a rotary tiller on the back.
-Run the tiller over the whole thing and try to level it as best I can
-Get some Hancock LaPrima and hit the yard with it and pray for the best

Thoughts?

If you can till that up and level it then that is what I would do. The seed changes so fast. First it was Princess 77, then Arden 15, then LaPrima, then Laprima XD, and last year Royal TXD. I see Royal TXD is out of stock and LaPrima is on sale. Makes me think that something else is about to come down the pipleline.

spread 30-0-4 yesterday.

Figured to 1lb of Nitrogen per 1K sq ft

picked up enought to do the backyard also

That is similar to the Sta-Green Performance Max that I put on my bermuda last year and it worked great.

Half of my lawn was sodded with bermuda and the other half was fescue seed. I have been trying to overseed the fescue with bermuda with limited results. Maybe I need better seed than what Lowes sells.

I overseeded some common with Royal Bengal last year. Worth considering. It came up quickly. It's still a little leggy but hopefully it gets better this season. Has a pretty fine leaf texture and decent color.

Don't let the seed dry out.

Tell me if I am doing this math correctly. Say I bought 50-0-0 (just for discussion sake). If I have an area I am working on of 3000 square feet, I would buy/use 6 pounds of that fertilizer bag every 2-4 weeks? Do I have that right? Thanks
