One that is nice for a couple of senior citizens who want a deck and sitting pool and some shade. But not one that looks like trailer trash and will fall apart in 5yrs.
For those of you who know what would you do if you were in a similar situation. Besides hanging out with your adult kids every day.

Stock tank pool? I've even seen them hooked up with filters.

If you are talking about a in-ground pool, the answer is no
No way for under 30K

Not during these economic times. Materials will eat their lunch even if they went with the most “economically priced” contractor. Sucks but that’s the current state of affairs.

Unfortunately the standard in-ground pool will start at about twice that.

All great replies and thanks. Might just buy a $100 pool from academy each year. Let my kids worry about it. We have a 1.5 acre pond we can swim in too.
No disrespect to anyone but the pool companies must be making a fortune. Makes no sense to me.

Maybe digging a hole and 3/4 sinking a pool in the ground and then build a deck.

A small liner pool might be slightly over that

Google Stealth Semi-Inground pool.

no way, just a pool light and salt cell will run you 2k.

I know a couple who put in a pool made out of a shipping container and that was around $30k. They had that for about five years, then installed a real pool. I guess maybe you could do that and try to convince yourself that it wasn’t a rusting shipping container.

I live in the country so I don't really care about curb appeal, you can't see my house anyway.
We went with an 18x33 above ground pool. That was 14k installed. We are working on building a deck around it with an outdoor kitchen and covered area.
The reasons for above ground.
1. We will build a house in a few years didn't want anything permanent in the way.
2. Cost
3. Make sure we actually use a pool before making the 80k plunge.

This is where people delude themselves. You will likely use your above ground pool a hell of a lot more than you will use a subsequent in-ground pool. Our pool gets very little use now that the kids have all moved out. My wife uses it occasionally, but it doesn’t get near the use it did when the kids and their friends hung out all the time. You made a good decision and have the opportunity to objectively evaluate whether it is worth the cost.

Look into “cocktail pools.” You may be able to get one in the neighborhood of $30k. They’re small, but that’s kind of the point.

Our neighbor built an in-ground hot tub (he calls it a spa) that is actually pretty damn nice and sits 8 adults easily. He claims it was only 25k, but he did a lot of work himself I think.
ETA:
Technically if he turned the heater off it'd be a pool

With much research this is probably what we will do, with a surround deck.

Honestly most crap that is standard on pools now isn’t necessary. I bet you can get a decent 10k gallon squareish shotcrete shell with lounging area then diy epoxy and pump/filter for well under $30k. You need a couple jets, a skimmer, and either bottom plugs or an inspection well for draining. That’s about it as far as necessities go, especially if you can manually vac or use a suction side vac every few days. Not sure what code says though. Also, pool is useless without a spa. There are 12 months in a year.
