Calling AC experts of the OT. AC hits setpoint, warms back to 80+, rinse and repeat

So within the past few days my home AC has gone on the fritz. A couple nights ago I noticed it was warm in the house so I looked and it was showing 81 on the thermostat while my setpoint was at 72. I just killed the power to it then brought it back online and it cooled down to the setpoint and I thought it was fine. Next morning it does the same exact thing though.
I called someone out today and it turned out I had a bunch of gunk on my coils outside from cutting grass, etc. Just basically organic debris. So he cleaned it up, tested to see if I needed any freon (I didn't) and it started cooling again. Well, just a few minutes ago the wife and I notice it was warm inside again and sure enough, its showing 79 inside.
Not sure where to go at this point. Nothing is dirty and everything checked out to the guy who came and looked at the unit earlier today. Now we did talk about the fact that my unit is currently 16 years old and only has a guaranteed life of 15 years, but he even noted how it seemed to be in good working condition.
What says the OT?

Take your filter out and look up at the Look up coils in the A frame to see if it’s frozen over. Turn off the compressor and run it in just fan cycle to thaw it if it is frozen over.

Could very well be a bad thermostat. If your compressor is running and you’re not low on gas, I’d replace it.

Set set point to 81
Problem solved
That’ll be $350

It could easily be a malfunctioning thermostat. You can replace it for cheap to see if that’s the issue. 20-50 bucks for a new one. The wiring is easy to do..

Dry as a bone.

Yep. Drain line is probably partially clogged and takes a while for the pan to drain/reset the switch

Check your drain pan. If it is not that, it could be a pressure switch on you compressor/unit. Some units when the pressure is too high/low requires a manual reset which would explain the unit working again for a little bit after a power cycle.

16 years is the problem.
Time for a new unit.

How does your house get to 81 then 79 degrees before you notice there's a problem?

We just aren't as observant to a small change in temperature I guess?

Sounds like your evaporator or condenser lines are freezing.
Your HVAC guy needs (unless you have the ability) to determine if the system is telling the compressor to come on all the time.

Did it feel like 81?
Yeah its definitely hotter in here. Enough to make me sweat. I don't suspect that the thermostat is showing a temperature hotter than the house actually is if that's where you're going.

Bad compressor, keels over when running, starts back up when you power cycle it.

Yeah that’s where I was going.
If everything is still running, drain pan is empty, and it’s still not cooling it’s probably gonna be a pricey fix.
