To keep them away a good idea is to not throw the dozens of dead and almost dead frogs you find in your pool every day into the grass around the pool. I learned this one after getting pool a few weeks ago.

Nothing works other than to keep the weeds, brush etc down where they can get cover. My wife used to put moth balls out at our old house and I killed a copperhead right next to them one time

An outdoor cat would be your best bet.

you might stick with the .22 but get a high enough grain to make it count.

FTR, i am deathly afraid of snakes, but do understand their merit in your environment.

If your response wasn’t “cook some rice”, you’re doing it wrong…

Get a single shot 410 and buy some 4 or 6 shot. Kills snakes easily

You could consider a physical barrier if you have a fence. Hardware cloth with holes at 1/4” will physically block most adult snakes. Not 100% proof but may help.

As others have said, cut grass low and don’t have wild landscaping. Be sure to get rid of any wood piles or rocks in your backyard.

I don't think any of these actually work.

Keep the garden trimmed up, and reduce their hiding places and food sources. That's really all you can do in south Louisiana. I hate the damn things, but I'd try to just shoe the king snakes away if I could. All bets are off if my wife sees them first, because then they have to be killed..

I just bought a house and the garden is an overgrown jungle. I know I'm going to have this problem very soon.

That works, but it's going to shred the paint of any car left outside. And it's going to shite everywhere.

You wasted that 15 bucks on "snake-away". It's been proven to not work and is probably least effective on the venomous snakes anyway.

And it is actually illegal to use them in that manner. Better hope you don't have a neighbor who's cat ends up sick or worse because they ate the mothballs.

Get a feist dog. Those sonsabitches are crazy and will attack anything they see fit. I once saw a feist eat a whole squirrel. He was a crazy arse dog.

Okay, a gun isn't an option...

Buy a shovel.

Buy snake proof boots (lacrosse has some I love)

Buy a grinder and flap disk.

Put razor edge on shovel and wear aforementioned boots.

Happy hunting.

(Disclaimer: I like snakes, and have studied how to identify venomous/non venomous. I do not blindly kill all snakes. But baw seems scared and I want to give options... And some humor)
