so what smart thermostat does the H&G board recommend? I have 4 units in my new house and would like to have smart, possibly learning, thermostats if for nothing else the look.

I have a Sensi and like it. A Nest has the learning curve.

I have an Ecobee and it’s pretty good. Also LA Entergy use to give a crazy good rebate for them, it would be worth to check and see if that’s still an option.

Per HVAC techs, Ecobee or Honeywell. Not Nest. LINK

My house had two nests in it when I bought it. After having to replace the blower fan twice, they traced it back to a faulty nest thermostat. I was never a fan of the nest anyways as their learning function would screw up my scheduled times for cooling and heating. Had both replaced with Honeywell T6 and love it and haven’t had an issues since getting rid of the Nest stats.

Honeywell

I love mine. The schedule is easy to set up, the app is very user friendly, and we've had no issues with it. Installed last October when we had to replace our main HVAC unit.

Ecobee worked well in my last house and going in my new build as well. I also use the room sensors with it

Nest. We have two. Works like a charm with zero issues.

Really like my basic Nest model, but they aren’t the learning models. Just the basic programable thermostat that has a sharp looking mirror finish. A “must do” homeowner upgrade over the old rectangular thermostat

I'd say ecobee... I do like the nest as long as you have a dedicated C-wire, don't use their "hack"

But these days I'm more afraid that a connected thermostat means that the government ends up taking control of it to ensure I have it set at 83 in the day and 78 at night.

The nice thing about Ecobee is you can set them up for local control and don't have to use their cloud and app. If you do this then you can deny internet access to the thermostat and not worry about the govt controlling it.
