I am looking to retire in 3 years and would like to build/buy a home on a lake. I would like the lake to be fairly large (nothing small). I want to be able to use the lake for fishing and water sports. I have been looking at Toledo Bend and Caney Creek. Any other suggestions for feedback on those two? Budget is 600K ish.

Lake Darbonne (Union Parish) near Farmerville, Louisiana. Over 15,000 acres.

False River in Pointe Coupee Parish. 600K can buy a small nice spot. Lake is like 28K ac, 14 miles long, oxbow lake.

Darbonne is a lake that can be used year round. There is also damn good hunting in that area. My only issue with Darbonne From a retirement perspective is the lack of things to do outside of the wilderness.

Lake Claiborne
Excellent white perch fishing
Excellent ski and wake board lake

Lake Bruin
Great skiing
Very rural area though
Excellent 2nd home or camp location
If you don’t one being isolated / remote then this is the choice

False River
Close to BR and NO
Much more expensive

Texas side of Toledo Bend, access to Sam Rayburn in easy driving range and avoid the income taxes of La. (with Wu Flu ravaging the budget it's a pretty sure bet La taxes are gonna skyrocket).

I bought a house on Lake Claiborne a few months ago and recommend it highly. the lake has a lot to offer. Great for water sports and the fishing is steadily improving. Average depth of the lake is 18’ which makes it one of the cleanest lakes in the state, if not the cleanest.

Real estate is reasonably priced as well. We spent a fraction of what you plan to spend and got an acre lot with 2 boat boathouse, pier, concrete retaining wall and over 200’ of lake frontage in an open water cove. The house was recently remodeled and a new addition added.

This one recently sold. They were asking $560,000. That’s a lot of house for the money. Even on a lake.

Wouldn’t you want to build on the LA side to avoid Texas property taxes?

You can get a very nice place on Toledo for the money you are looking at spending.

One thing to consider.....Buddy of mine retired and he and his wife bought a place on Lake Ouachita (Arkansas). They are selling the Arkansas house and buying on False River because they had a few health issues and want to be closer to quality health care. They found out being 2-3 hours from a decent hospital and doctors was not good.

Geez, I'd be happy with 10 acres on or near a lake with a 1500-1700sf house, don't need 3000sf, even just a lot for my camper and build later.

The outdoor space is more important to me than the dwelling.

Lake Bruin in Tensas Parish has been mentioned but it is in a very rural area. Nearest towns are Ferriday, Vidalia, and Tallulah.

Lake Darbonne, in Union parish, is near West Monroe/Monroe, Ruston, and a short driving distance to Shreveport along the I-20 corridor. Also, it's a short drive to the Arkansas line(just 40 miles to El Dorado Arkansas).

Lake Darbonne is one of the top lakes in the US for Crappie fishing. It recently hosted the Crappie Masters Tourney back in February. Real estate prices are very reasonable for the area, and with your budget, you can find a very nice lakeside home.

Yep.

Mom and Dad retired and built in Hot Springs Village about 2 miles outside of Hot Springs. Beautiful gated community of near 20k people n a rural setting of hills, and forests. Bunch of golf courses, bunch of lakes, biking trails, hiking trails, tennis, swimming, their own police force, ... you name it.

Things were great for 20 years. Then old age and its toll behind to take shape. The 30 minutes drive into Hot Springs was rough on the winding 2 lane road to shop or general health appointments. Major Medical was Little Rock, a good hour away. Emergencies were Lifeflight. (although the out of pocket cost for EMS including Lifeflight for the Villagers is zero, included in the monthly POA dues)
