Doesn’t add up, if coverage was bound and met underwriting guidelines you should’ve been contacted by agent for correction.

I’ve had shelter forever. Awesome company, but their rate hikes in SWLA are making me change. They want out of SWLA, and I get it. But they increased 30% last year and another 25% coming up.

Yesterday my wife got letter from same insurance company that they will now cover us but added an extra 1k to the amount for the year. Not understanding how they sent us a letter stating they couldn’t cover us because of mail not being responded to to or undeliverable because of address issues but a week later mail us a letter stating that they will cover us but for more money. Don’t see how our agent did this but need to contact them and ask how this is possible.

Wish this place had pms, if it’s a company I rep I would find out for you. Someone dropped the ball with your policy and it wasn’t you.
Good Luck

What could I possibly do about it at this point. They are still the cheaper option and are well recommended by people I know.

USAA is high as a cat's back, but from my experience (about $50k in claims over the past year), them SOBs pay out good.

I would want an explanation of the reason for the increase in writing from them. Once bound it’s rare (never seen it in 24 yrs) to see them change the rate and contract. Had it happen one time on a commercial property but called them out and they backed off.

USAA treats their homeowners pretty good overall, but they typically have pretty high deductibles. We consistently see deductibles in the 7,500-10,000 range with them. Which is insane. Notes are typically low but they get you with the deductibles.

Farm Bureau are the two best for home owners

I have home, life and auto with Farm Bureau and it keeps going up rapidly. I just got my homeowners renewal Saturday and it was another 50% increase on top of a nearly 50% increase last year. I've reached out to my agent to discuss options. Not sure there are any, but it is outrageously high. (Prairieville area)

Have my auto and home policies bundled with Progressive (ASI). Premium renewal for home increased by 30% last month and auto by 15%.

Not much recourse at this point as they are still the cheapest and legit offerings for South Baton Rouge. No longer have the ability to jump around to different carrier and save money like you could a few years ago.

Yikes, that is pretty harsh. I'd hate to tell someone to leave Farm Bureau but it might be worth calling Shelter and getting a quote. They typically aren't the cheapest either but man a 50% increase two years in a row is tough to get behind no matter how good the coverage is.

That's where I'm at with it. The best advice my dad ever gave me was to stick with FB for home and auto. "you maybe can't afford the most expensive insurance, but you certainly can't afford the cheapest..."

I'm willing to pay a bit of a premium to have good coverage that won't screw me if bad things happen. I've had an auto claim 3+ years back and they were great. The only homeowner's claim I had was a roof back in 2008 with Gustav.

I suspect part of the expense is the 1% wind/hail. Other than that, it is a normal ~2k square foot home in suburbia.

Never heard of any deductible near that, but South LA insurance is a different game. I'm in Jxn, MS.

Depends on the coverage. I had one of those FL carriers last year (we live in BR) and had to get a new policy due to the company going insolvent. Hindsight we were massively underinsured and got what we paid for. We're more than adequately insured now for a sizably larger premium. That could be what happened here.

So I talked to my agent. I have a few strikes against me at the moment.

1 - 2009 Roof (Gustav). She crunched the numbers with a new roof and it would save me $2k/year. I was advised to get it inspected after the next hail storm.

2 - 1% wind/hail currently. At a 3%, I could save $500/year. Not worth it IMO

On the plus side, I am able to move my auto to their new system and save $120/month with no change in coverage. That helps offset this increase for sure.
I also have a call in for a quote with Shelter. Curious how that compares.

How long until that roof claim disappears off your record?

Good question. I interpreted it not as a claim issue but an age of roof issue. I assume being older increases its likelihood of needing replacement after a storm.

I’ve got USAA for everything now. I was stupid and overpaid for 20 yrs before trying them out. Before that I had Farm Bureau
