I have an established Zoysia lawn. I'm not sure what type of zoysia I have. I have some worn spots where the mailman walks through the yards. I figured it was damage from him, but today I saw a weird "weed" sticking up. It was a Bermuda rhizome. I looked closer and the spots I thought were damaged are actually Bermuda growing shorter than the zoysia.
My question is,will the Bermuda take over my Zoysia eventually? I'd rather have the zoysia. I live in the transition zone of SC.

A mailman walking once a day on your grass has created worn spots?

That shouldn't happen should it?

We have zoysia in our backyard and our beagle has created a wear path in it from our deck to the back fence, but he makes that little trip many times a day.

Weird why animals walk the exact same path in places. Like cows.

Probably. It did for me. Unless it's in a shadier area which Zoysia can handle better.

Full sun? Bermuda is like a metastasized cancer. It is hard AF to stop it. I'm sure there are bermuda specific killers out there though.

I’m doing this experiment in my front yard right now. We have Bermuda, but where we had to remove a tree, we decided to replace that area with zoysia sod (my wife likes how zoysia looks) to see if it would spread against the Bermuda. When we replace the other tree in my yard, we’ll do the same thing. I might just end up having random splotches of zoysia in a Bermuda lawn but it’ll still look good cut low and weed free hopefully

I had some Bermuda in my yard but put in pallets of Zeon Zoysia and the Zeon is so thick, it crowded out the Bermuda. The Zeon & Bermuda merged but eventually the Bermuda disappeared entirely and the area is now full Zeon

This. Active ingredient is flauzifop something. Ornamec is another brand that contains it and is generally less expensive, I think because of being less concentrated. The mix rate is very low, as it will kill your zoysia if too strong. But the label has instructions specifically for Bermuda in zoysia. It’s generally marketed as an over the top weed killer for flower beds. It used to be in one of the weed-b-gone varieties in a pump spray bottle, but at a concentration too strong for zoysia. Best way to see where you have Bermuda in a zoysia lawn, especially the narrower blades zoysias, is to look over the lawn in the early morning. The dew sets different on Bermuda. It beads up on Bermuda, but lays flat on zoysia. It’s very obvious in my lawn early morning. I’ve had emerald zoysia since 2005. I still battle wild Bermuda at times here and there. I’m SE LA, I dethatch 2-3 times a summer to stay on top of thatch, but at the expense of giving Bermuda a chance each time.

Really it completely depends on the type of zoysia and the type of Bermuda you have.

I had a small flower bed in my front yard when we bought the house. We dug it up and put down zoysia, don’t remember which type. It’s either Meyer or palisades. The zoysia has completely taken over the front yard.
No trees in the front yard and the Bermuda was very established and very thick.

Back yard we had a couple of spots that had dead
Bermuda from various projects. Put down zoysia and it looked great. Bermuda is encroaching on the zoysia. Again full sun.
