Or are there higher quality/more reputable brands out there? Going to change out out myself because these things seem to be stupid cheap but the HVAC company wants $300 from me to do it.

The general concensus is to buy American if possible.

I got a MARS since it was made in the USA and I believe I've heard the quality is longer-lasting.

Looks like this is what you would need: MARS 12283 440V

Most of the more knowledgeable guys on here than me generally recommend AmRad as one of the better American brands...that's what I typically use and keep on hand as spares...you can find them on Amazon too

pro tip...when you order yours, also pickup a backup

AmRad capacitors are USA made in Boca Raton FL, and have an excellent reputation. I changed the OEM capacitor on my 1 1/2 year Trane condensing unit a month or so ago (still good but made in Thailand, and now it’s a spare) with an AmRad capacitor.

The AmRad is nearly twice the diameter of the OEM, same height - had to make a new bracket out of metal strapping to attach it - couldn’t use the old as it wouldn’t wrap around it.

No, capacitors are not created equal - you get what you pay for. An AmRad capacitor might be $30-50 vs $15-20 for a foreign made capacitor.

ETA: I follow a couple HVAC Tech Y/T channels and the small company HVAC owners swap out the Chinese made OEM capacitors with better made capacitors in brand new condensing units before they install them b/c they got tired of having call backs to customers’ houses within the first year to change blown capacitors. Customers are pissed - new units - but not the tech’s fault - they don’t put the crappy capacitors in the units - manufacturers do.

I second this. Buy AMRAD whenever possible.

Buy AmRad and buy two so you have a backup. I like having backup fuses too. Those are cheap and good to have around.

I swear capacitors always go out at night or on the weekends and you’ll get dinged extra for after hours or weekend charge by the AC companies

they also make universal ac capacitors that have various sizes all in one. with one of those you could have a backup while you order exactly what you need. that would cover if you have multiple ac units with different capacitors or family member or friends that may run into an issue on the weekend.

somethign like this

These are also good if you have two different sized units. If you have two similar units they may run the same capacitor. My two 3 ton units only vary on the rating for the fan but have the same for the compressor. So a couple dual spares and a single for that fan and we're good to go.

AmRad and Titan HD are US-made and both are about as good as you will get these days. Fact of the matter is, even US-made capacitors today are not as good as what they used to make. The metal film inside is thinner, the use of non-PCB oils makes them less tolerant to high tempertures so even the best aren't as good as they used to be so buy two of each type you need.

In your pic the crimped-sleeve connections are corroding. Protect with shrink tubing and electricians' silicon lubricant.
