Got to talking to a guy at a local cigar shop, and apparently the USDA did a local survey and determined that premium cigar tobacco could be grown in our soil. The best land was a stone's throw from our family land.

I've been contemplating growing a quarter acre or so just to see what happens, but I know absolutely nothing about the curing process, etc.

I don't know the differences between cigar and cigarette tobacco plants and associated curing, but I'd imagine there are plenty of people up in the Carolina's and Virginia who could walk you through the process they use.

Perique is supposedly still grown in limited amounts in Louisiana.

There are youtube videos on the curing process, doesn't seem that difficult. Go for it, I bet you could easily sell to some boutique cigar brands for the chance to market some new offering with brand new premium Louisiana sun grown wrapper/filler.

Southern Draw is a boutique brand out of Texas that comes to mind.

Just noticed you're an Aggie fan, so may have mistakenly assumed you were in Louisiana, but point still stands.

There was a guy around Vacherie that was doing it. They had him on one of those travel channel shows a few years back.

What many consider to be the finest tobacco in the world is grown in St. James Parish

Worst drunk you’ve ever had in your life after working in the stripping process (pulling stem from leaf to make a pack of leaves tied with raffia string and later placed in barrels for rest of process). My neighbors were all tobacco farmers and some family members continue now. I hear it’s blended in with other cigar mixes. Strong stuff! Good money for all local kids growing up. Several videos on web.

Nice! Let me know how it goes.

The guy at the cigar shop said he has access to some Cuban seed. Might take him up on his offer.

Sadly, I’m afraid we have missed the window to plant tobacco for this year (you’re supposed to harvest it in late June). From what I have read, it takes basically a year of pressing and stirring to process perique into something smokeable or chewable.

I've grown Perique tobacco. Grow enough to press and ferment and you've got the best there is. Do it!

It's a year round crop.

My grandfather used to plant chewing tobacco on his family's old farm as a side hustle all of the grandkids participated in in Southern Wisconsin.

Early spring planted small plants in a bed and back in the day hooked the steam tractor to it to keep the bed warm.

My brother an I would help plant on Summer vacation (later planting time in WI).

In the fall, harvest and mount stalks on wood poles to hang in the top of the barn until winter.

During Christmas, strip leaves and bale in paper bales for sale to Red man, Chattanooga chew, etc.

There was sometimes mold on the bottom leaves that had to be cut off as waste. Not sure how the drying process would work in our humid environment.

I received my perique seeds today! They must be tiny seeds because the package feels empty to me and there’s supposed to be a hundred seeds in there! I am going to have a hard time waiting until next year to plant them!

I got them from a company called “Strictly Medicinal Seeds”. They have a website and the seeds were fairly cheap.
