SO just bought a house for a really good deal. Gonna need some updating, but the location, and the price she paid were too good to pass up.

Problem is, the old lady that she bought it from smoked in the house for the 7 years she lived there. Walls and roof need to be repainted. Any tips on getting the smoke smell out?

Sealing and painting the ceilings and walls will help, get rid of soft stuff that will hold smoke, like drapes and carpet

Remove all soft stuff, remove wallpaper, rent an ozone machine, hire a duct cleaning company and clean the ducts, clean ac system coils inside.

Wipe down all walls, floors, trim, ceilings, etc with soapy water (I like to use a floor cleaner like Lysol) to get the oil and tar off.

finally repaint everything,

There is some carpet that we plan to rip out. I’ll pass on the rest of the info. Thanks a bunch.

I had the same issue with some rental property that a tenant smoked in even though he wasn't supposed to. HD has a chemical you can clean the wall with before sealing and painting them. It will take a lot of cleaning of just about every inch of the house. Get rid of all carpets and anything cloth left behind.

Ozone, but please know what you are doing when using it. It can kill you.

After cleaning....

Prime walls and ceilings with Oil-based Kilz. Make sure you have proper ventilation or you'll burn your brain cells. Ask me how I know.

Cook Indian curry dishes for a few days, you’ll never smell smoke again

This was also recommended by our insurance agent and adjuster after a small kitchen fire. Got rid of the smell.

Just a followup to oil based Kilz recommendation...

I had a rental where the mother would go into the small half bath to smoke. The walls were literally dripping with tar/nicotine. She eventually got lung cancer.

But scrubbed walls, Kilz, and paint and we were good to go.

Seriously you gotta try an Ozone machine. They work amazing, I'm not sure how but they do. Most people don't know about them. Its not going to stop something from smelling, but an old smell like smoke gets removed amazing well. You probably should still paint and remove items like carpet. But Ozone machine will make it almost like new smelling and smell clean also.

I have one from Amazon that was $99 at one point and now down to $67. You literally just turn it on and let it run, you can't be in the house and have to let it air out for a couple minutes. But that's all there is to it. Well worth trying.

That may work with the smell but the oil and tar are still on everything. If that is not washed off you will get poor paint adhesion and all your new paint will eventually peel off.

Your chance to clean it correctly and repaint is now.
