No offense, but I'm asking y'all as a last resort as the ac company I'm using doesn't know what's going on.

My ac is doing this thing where the compressor will shut off and immediately come right back on, while the fan inside continues to blow. It's like it's getting a mixed message from the inside temp and gets confused, thus shutting off and coming right back on.

AC company came out, checked everything and couldn't find an issue. Google says it's low refrigerant, but ac guy who came said it's at the level it's supposed to be.

Anyone else ever deal with this? It's driving me nuts and I'm worried that sudden starts/stops is going to kill my compressor.

I'd rather not pay more $$ just for the company to come back out and tell me there's no issue.

This was going to be my question. A lot of folks install smart thermostats and face some hiccups

It sort of sounds like short cycling. So that is why I asked.

discussed on the H&G board

Did they check the control panel? Our control panel went bad, and made the AC wonky. Not sure it was doing what you described.

Could be a faulty contactor on the outside unit, how often is it happening and how long does the compressor stay off?

I’ve actually encountered an issue that sounds similar, but the culprit was wiring/power to the thermostat as the root cause.

Damn thermostat tech support probably saved me a lot of $$

Edit: spot on. Good link for the OP

Just a regular digital thermostat. Not a "smart" one.

The condenser fan could be going off. The motor could be running slow because of bad bearings. Thus allows the compressor to cycle on and off when it overheats and then cools down.

It could be the condenser going bad. But it also could be bad contact with wires behind the thermostat.. the wire need to be cleanly striped again so they can make better contact. AC guy did that at my house for free one time... and that was the issue. Now he's the only place I call.

Go into your attic and see if you have a float switch coming off the Evaporator Coil. Pull it out and check the drain line. It could be mostly clogged with a slow drain backing up on that float which will kill the condenser and the second the float drops back down it’ll kick on. Without a delay programmed into your thermostat it’ll just kick on and off. This will kill your compressor. Some brands it goes into reverse.

Could be multiple things. Bad thermostat, bad control wiring from transformer to comtactor, bad contractor, bad safety switch.

Surely his AC guy would have checked this, right?

You can install a delay timer to prevent the short starts and avoid smoking the compressor. A long term band-aid I've used in commercial AC applications Protection from screwballs operating the thermostats and fast switching t-stats.

I mean who knows. I have a procedure that I do on every call. I go the the thermostat the, evaporator coil then the condenser. I check all components of the system every unit I look at. Not all service techs do that.
