I recently had this done. Its in the ballpark. You didnt mention brand and its warranty.

Couple additional things to think about while in there: Replace support shelf and replace PVC drain line. Those two are fairly simple while everything is out of the way. Also something that really helped was spending more time/money on sealing everything above and beyond simple duct retrofit.

That's a fair price, especially today with inflation and whatnot. I got a Rheem 3 ton furnace and coil for $4000 cash back in 2021 but my contact also does the HVAC work on the side and not full time so I think I got a good deal. So $5000-$5500ish sounds reasonable. You also didn't mention tonnage.

Also, be sure they use the proper type-B ducting for the vent on the furnace if it's gas. I think most HVAC companies would know this but you never know.

EDIT: Good thing you're doing this now before the 2025 refrigerant change. That would make it considerably more expensive and would require a new compressor unit as well.

Is that replacement of just the evaporator coil or the entire air handler/furnace with the evap coil? If the former, it sounds pretty high; if the later, then it might be in ball park. I’d get at least 1 or 2 more quotes.

PS - this a R410a or R22 system?

this sounds like more than a simple coil replacement. for comparison, a few yrs ago my high dollar Trane coil and Tx valve was around $1000 for just the parts.

Thinking the same. Why would ducts need to be retrofitted to change the coil?

That sounds outrageous to me.

I had a quote last year for $3000 which I thought was real high. The tech explained that the air handler would have to be removed from the closed to swap.

So we went with a new air handler which was $4500-5000.

Get a second quote.

That is way higher than I paid last year. I paid 2200 for a coil replacement.

I had one replaced in 2021 and it was under warranty. Cost.... $1500 for the refrigerant and labor per Goodman.

The unit was 3 years old. Still chaps my arse. I sold that house and built one with Lennox systems.

$5500 for a unit not named Goodman and not under warranty sounds about right.

I got lucky and had it done at cost ($1200) in July for a 4 ton evaporator coil. Friend of a friend helped us out. When his crew had me sign off, they were shocked at the price since they weren't aware of the deal made prior. They told me that'd typically be a ~$3000 install. Don't think it required much ductwork or sheet metal work if any at all.

I have a one month old quote from a Metairie AC company for $3,992.88. Just evaporator coils + refrigerant.

I have two units, both 6 years old. I replaced a coil on one last year. I have been out of a/c on a second unit for going on two weeks waiting on a valve. After failed attempts with the wrong part, the tech showed up today with the correct part. Turns out the coil was a different coil with a different serial number....looking like that coil had been replaced prior to me purchasing the house.

It is amazing how much bull crap I have had with these two relatively new units. And the coil was not under warranty because the installer never registered it. I dont know enough to know if I am getting the run around or not.

If you are talking about replacing the whole interior evaporator unit (coil, fan, heat exchanger, etc.) that sounds reasonable depending on size, brand, and accessibility.

If you have a leaking coil and are talking about simply replacing the coil within the evaporator unit, then that sounds a little high to me.

No shite. I had my A/C unit recharged earlier in the summer, but the HVAC guy sniffed my evaporator coil and confirmed it's leaking around a few of the u bends. He said to replace the coil and recharge would be right at $1000.

I just got it done this week for $3K

Didn't need new pan or float switch.

Your quote seems high.

What he said.

I just had my reap coil and air handler replaced for 6K. It was going to be 4K for just evap coil (it was leaking).

I am not sure how this all works. The units have the manufacture date stamped on the equipment. Why does it need to be registered? The Lennox installer did have to register my new system. It was very important evidently.
