I found a smoking deal on some 32-in x 32-in porcelain tiles today for .21 cents per sq ft on clearance. I picked up a few grand worth of tiles for $170 but I am trying to decide if it's a good idea or cheesy looking for my foyer area.

My foyer area connects to an office and the dining area. Together the area is about 600 sq ft total with 14' to 16' ceilings but my actual foyer is only 8' wide x 13' long. Is a 32" tile going to overwhelm that area or will the ceiling height help? I don't want the wider tiles to create an illusion and make the area feel smaller.

This is the foyer area layout. It opens from there into the living room

Opinions?

Large format tiles are becoming more popular. As long as you like how they look, I don't see an issue with installing in the foyer.

Well, I am going to do that whole area with them but was mostly worried about the larger tiles "shrinking" the foyer and making it feel more narrow.

I am a contractor. Not a designer. I am pretty bad at colors and design.

I thought the rule was the bigger tiles would make the room smaller.

If you can get at least 4 tiles across it may not be too bad. Find a similar size room and lay those bad boys out.

Color & pattern of the tile and walls & ceilings?
Laying square or angled or offset?
On an angle would probably look good. Square, 3 wide might look cheesy.
Any rugs or side tables in the foyer?

We just completed a new home and have 48 x 24 tiles in the majority of the house (bedrooms are wood).

I was a little apprehensive about how I would like it, but the installer did a great job and it looks great. The tiles were laid with 1/3rd overlap.

I was concerned about it being noisy, but with furnishing and drapes installed, noise is not a problem.

I think bigger tiles will look more modern and open… smaller tile and more grout lines will make a small area look busy IMO

And holy shite that’s an awesome price

It all depends on the color of the foyer and the color of the tiles.

I think you'd be better off going 45° instead of orthogonal but for my house I model and do basic rendering for projects. I don't think I'm very good at design in my mind like I am with structures but I know what looks good when I see it.

Turning the tiles 45° will make them appear not quite as large when viewed from the front or sides. You could also do something like a herringbone pattern by offsetting half a tile.

Tiles that large should be offset 1/3 or less to manage lippage.

Tile update. Home Depot didn't have enough at my local store so this morning I ran and bought everything I could find from another HD. No other stores within a few hours had anymore so I was happy just to have enough for the foyer area from my OP.

Yesterday, when I bought what they had at my local store they were supposed to put the ticket on will call for today. Well, they didn't and put it as a special order so now I have 15 more boxes coming and still picked up the 15 boxes today. They aren't supposed to order more of an item at clearance price apparently and messed up.

I have now obtained 1109 sq ft for around $260 with tax.

Looks like I am doing my master bath and utility room now too. The good thing is they have this in a 12x24 size as well for my other two smaller baths so it's consistent throughout the whole house.

This is the tile. It's not our favorite or first choice but we will be flipping this house within the year.

ETA: they said they are clearing it out locally because no one is buying 32x32 tile but overall Home Depot will still be carrying it if I need to order more but it won't be at .21 cents per sq ft.

My parents built a house in 2000/2001 and did 30 inch tiles laid diagonal though out and it looked great. I say go for it. High ceilings and neutral wall colors and the tiles were a beige/cream color. Foyer was similar to your diagram. Main entry but with a small sitting area to the left and a dining room to the right.
