Beautiful day in NW LA. Peppers and a few tomatoes are out (my tomatoes are way behind, so I only had a few that were ready). Going to put a few cucumbers and zucchini out this afternoon. Also put out a few flowers and basil.

A general question for the thread. Any issue with planting tomato seedlings ahead of the inclement weather expected this Saturday in SE LA? Should I wait for the weather to pass?

This is for fresh pickles. I've saved them in jars in the refrigerator for 2-3 months and they have still tasted good and were still crunchy. I'm not doing the pickling process of putting the jars in boiling water and all that.

I have a 1 gallon glass jar that i use (2 actually).

Fill the 1 gallon jug with 4 cups of water and 3 cups of white vinegar.
Mix all of the following ingrediants into the jug:
2/3 cup brown sugar
4 TBSP Kosher salt
mix those two first and make sure they dissolve completely.
4 TBSP Black pepper (coarse or whole peppercorns, don't recommend fine ground pepper)
4 TBSP Coriander seeds
2 tsp Crushed Red Pepper (add more if you want them spicier, but they can get pretty spicy)
1/2 cup garlic (I just use minced garlic from the jar)
1.5 cups of fresh Dill

Start adding cut up cucumbers. I can typically fit about 8 of my cut up pickling cucumbers into a jar. Let that sit in the refrigerator for 24-48 hours.
And here's the aggravating part.
Remove the pickled cucumbers from the jug and put into individual jars. Use the juice from the jug to fill up the jars once they are packed tight with pickles. Try your best to remove all the dill, garlic, pepper, coriander from the pickles and juice. I'll use a colander to strain the juice, but then you have to literally wash off each cucumber as it'll be covered in all the seasoning. That's more for simply wanting to open a jar and get a pickle out of it to eat without having other stuff all on it.

I haven’t paid attention to the forecast, but how bad is it supposed to get? If the seedlings are properly hardened off they should be fine even with some heavy rain. As long as the winds aren’t too bad.

ETA: If not sure, better safe than sorry and wait till it passes.

I'm gonna put mine in the ground on Sunday. Looks like it could get pretty windy down here so I don't want to risk that.

Finally got potatoes in...if this is a precursor to the rest of the spring garden season, I may not make next year's thread

I was impressed how much wind and hail tomato plants can withstand. However, the California weave did damage the stems from constant rubbing on strings.

We got a little small hail last night. I did a quick check in the dark this morning before heading to work and everything seems to have held up fine.

I'd be more worried about splash-up onto the lower leaves from heavy rain. Shouldn't be a problem if you have a good mulch layer.

Raised beds help with this as well.

My seedlings are ready for prime time. Unfortunately I’m watching the temps for this coming Thursday. Showing a low of 37. Started out at 40 and it keeps creeping lower. I should be in the clear after that.

The strawberries are really starting to boom. Picked the first red one yesterday.

I was productive this weekend, built another bed today

also planted two trees, cut one down, filled the hummingbird feeders, replaced all the water hoses that I’ve run over with the mower, transplanted some perennials, and treated my problem ant piles

time for me to sit

I’ve got a lot of peppers out and a few other things. I’ve got more ready to go after this week’s cold front

Going to put my ice fishing hut over my 4x8 bed with the peppers

Have any of you gone to Dollar Tree and gotten the plant cloches? They are really cool, and have an open/close vent on the top. I use them every year because our weather is so iffy. As soon as you transplant, you know it will turn cold.
