Was a month late seeding tomatoes. Finally got a few romas coming in.

Butternuts aren't huge, but almost ready.
Seminole pumpkins getting there too.
Onions of varying sizes done curing.

quote:Ive had a nice influx of em. Cucs are coming on like crazy. My pole beans are dropping leaves, but setting up a nice crop of beans. I think I have an aphid problem as I have some ladybugs that have shown up too, will spray today.
The cucumbers are starting to roll in. So they're getting pollinated somehow. Hopefully the bees are just showing up whenever I'm not there.

Mrs Sausage (she loves that name) already cleaned up a bunch of yellow onions and put them away. The reds were the last to come in from the garden.

You will love them. They taste great. Use them in place of bell peppers. Taste great right off the plant

Man, I suck at growing cucumbers. I always have something really messing them up, sometimes a couple of things at the same time. Mildew, or rust or insects. This time might be spider mites, I'm not real sure. I give up!
Tomatoes are kicking arse though so that makes me feel better.

Same. Some years my cucumbers are great, and this year they're laughing at me! Very low yield and the plants look pathetic. I finally broke down and hand-pollinated them, which seems to have improved things.
But...my tomatoes and peppers are doing great, so I feel better about those. At this board's recommendation, I ordered seeds for Jimmy Nardello, Scotch Bonnet, Shishito, and Cubanelle. Those babies are looking healthy, and I'm about to start bringing them outside for field trips.
I have Bananas, Jalapenos, Giant Marconis, Bells, Anaheims, Srirachas, and Tabascos thriving and producing. Also...some very sad eggplant and some very worn out green beans (but happy butter beans). The okra is starting to take off, and I have herbs coming out of my ears. We win some and lose some, I guess, but gardening is so fun either way.

What is wrong with my cucumbers this year. They look terrible. A little green on the end and then mostly white or yellow. Taste bad too. Grew them successfully in the same spot last year. Haven’t seen any bees.

I am about to have to take actions that Atticus Finch would not approve of.

Are you growing them on a trellis so they can climb and have the foliage and fruit off the ground? If not, that may be your main problem. Cucumbers are one of my biggest producers behind okra and tomatoes in my spring/summer garden.
I've got a 20 ft. x 6 ft. tall trellis for cucumbers and so far I've picked a couple dozen off it and have PLENTY more coming in.
My okra is about 4 ft. tall and I'm picking 15-20 pods a day right now but that will pick up to 45-50 a day in about 1 more month as they grow taller.
I've been hammering cherry tomatoes and now the creole and heirloom are ripening quickly after weeks of getting bigger, but still green.
The fig tree is getting ready to explode and I managed to pick about 100 of them this morning bright and early before the birds did much damage. When in full swing I'll be picking a couple hundred a day until they play out after a couple weeks.
Bell and jalapeno peppers are going strong and I'm just starting to see the hotter varieties of habanero and Ghost peppers producing and once it gets to July and August, they usually take off like crazy and I'm picking at least twice a week.
Eggplants are doing good with the Ichiban type producing more and earlier than the standard purple globe variety, but the globes are coming in nicely with several on each plant. Good thing we like eggplant.
I've been surprised by my squash having picked several zucchini and a few yellow crookneck after a late planting of seeds. So far the dreaded SVB's have stayed away and I'm going to be loaded with squash if they don't come around this year.
My pole beans suck this year. Tons of vine, hundreds of flowers, but very few beans so far. I'm seriously considering pulling them and replacing them with my tried and true Yard Long variety that is a fast grower and heavy producer that can be direct sown until August.

Newb question here. Most seed packets say to plant multiples. What is the rule for keeping them? Are some plants single only? For instance, can two cucumber vines survive satisfactorily side by side?
Posted on 6/10/25 at 9:20 am to AlxTgr
The reason for planting multiples is that some seeds simply don't germinate or do well once they break ground. You may also lose some to bugs that will sometimes eat the plants main stem when they are just sprouting.
On the back of the packet it will tell you the plant and row spacing. It may say Plant spacing 4 inches and Row spacing 3 ft.
That simply means get established plants 4 inches apart in rows and keep the rows 3 ft. from each other.
Plants like beans, lettuces, many other leafy greens, cucumbers, etc. can be grown in close proximity to each other in rows.
For my pole beans I like a plant every 4 inches apart planted along a trellis for them to climb. I thin my cucumber plants to about 10 inches apart, again on a trellis.
Big plants like eggplants and peppers I like to keep 18 inches between them. As far as tomato plants go, I like 3 ft. between them so they are never crowded and get good air circulation between the plants to keep mildew and mold issues at bay as much as possible.
Generally speaking, the larger the plant, the more space needed between them.
My biggest exception to that rule is my okra plants that will get to be 8 ft. tall by season's end. I space them about 18 inches apart in rows 3 ft. apart and they really fill out the space.

I have them growing up chicken mesh. Directly sown, thinned to correct spacing and water and fertilize as recommended. They always start out with a bang and then something always rears it's head. Honestly I just think I'm unlucky with cucumbers. I've had good success with literally everything else I've grown (tomatoes, eggplant, squash, bush beans, peppers, sweet corn, melons, cow peas).

I just ran across a video on squash borers and learned they can affect cucumbers. Had no idea and will have to go check mine now.

If you can get squash to grow up a pole as opposed to out on the ground that will greatly help to diminish borers and squash bugs.
I can't tell you why but I did it last year. I stuck a pole in the ground and tied the squash vines to grow vertical on the poles. Not a single issue with either last year and none so far this year, though Just started them on the poles in the last couple of weeks.

Just ate the first ever beet that I’ve grown myself. It’s been in a pot since the fall. Absolutely delicious, without any seasoning, after steaming.
I’m going to cover my entire property in beets.

dont want to walk out there after all the rain and storms all week. tomatoes were loaded and have a feeling we had lots of branches break.

Every single one of my cucumber vines look to have been damaged by borers. Really explains the sudden down turn. Learning a lot this year.
