I started my tomatoes yesterday. I normally start at the same time as peppers, but I feel like my tomatoes are always too big for their pots when it comes time to plant out. So I held off a bit.

Mardi Gras ball this weekend then parade on the 3rd. After that, no alcohol for lent. Hoping that’ll give me plenty of energy to build my garden boxes .

Got my soil sample results back. Low on potassium and sulfur. Explains some of last year's light yields.

Hoping for a dry spell to get it amended but not looking good this week.

Can someone help me with what I should do with these soil results? How bad is it?

Well...sub 50% expected yield

Does it tell you what to add per 100ft row?

Eta here's my recommended amendments

I didn’t get any recommendations. I was just emailed the results. Did the recommendations come with the mailed results?

They did call me and said they had to do a “no-soil”test because of all of the organic matter present. I bought all of the “garden soil” at once about 18 months ago.

Yes, my amendment recommendations were listed above my results. Did you test through LSU?

Yes, they’ll have more detailed instructions and recommendations when you get it in the mail. I’d start by adding some sulfur to get the pH down.

Did you provide vegetables grown for each sample?

Test was through LSU, and I provided vegetables grown. No amendment recommendations were on the emailed reports.

Mine doesn’t look like the one provided above.

Gotcha. Hopefully the mailed report will have it. Mine was on the emailed report. Worst case, I'm sure you can just call or email them for the info.

Are there any uses for butternut squash seeds other than using them to replant? I feel bad throwing them all away.

So I rec’d an invoice in the mail from LSU. Are the results typically mailed separately?

I never had much luck with those garden mixes you buy in bulk from nurseries. I use Mel’s Mix in my raised beds and have had great success. You can google it. It consists of 1/3 coarse vermiculite, 1/3 sphagnum peat moss and 1/3 organic compost gathered from several different sources for best results. It is more expensive and a little more trouble mixing it but the results are worth it.

This is what I filled my 3 beds with and apparently it’s garbage (see results a few posts above). I’m trying to get recs from LSU Ag, but I may need help from here on how to amend what I have.

That's a bummer, will have to look around and see what the best option is around here. Not super worried about the price, would rather pay a little more now and not have to worry about it for a while.

Am I dreaming, or did there used to be a stickied thread all about growing grass on the home page?

Vermiculite got very hard to find and was expensive as could be if you did find it during and after COVID. I have seen it popping back up lately though.
