After repotting them I never gave them any fertilizer. I think it was just the warm weather and extra room for root growth.

Nice. I'm hoping to do the same this afternoon.

All my recently planted veggies didn't make it looks like. Damn freeze. I'm going to give them through the end of the week and then start a new this weekend.

As I get ready to plant out, I'm thinking of adding some blueberries. The local nursery has tifblue variety. Any experience with these... go with them or stay away?

They are fine, but they're a rabbiteye so you need to plant another rabbiteye variety for cross pollination. I have Brightwell and Alapaha.

This. I have Tifblue, Climax, and Premier. Make sure your soil is acidic before you plant them. They like it around 4.5 - 5.5 pH.

Ok, I plan on getting four of them and putting in a line along my fence

I'll be starting from scratch as there's grass currently that I'll need to kill.

Will probably just get a general garden blend from the nursery. What's the best way to make it more acidic? Could I go ahead and prep and plant, then add some type of solution to increase its acidity after having a soil test performed?

It's probably best to test the soil and try to make corrections before planting.

Adding elemental sulfur. But it takes a while to lower the soil pH. Aluminum sulfate will also lower it, and faster, but it's effects don't last as long. Also, using too much aluminum sulfate can become toxic as it builds up in the soil. Or so I've read.

ETA: This is the stuff I used. It took months before my soil pH dipped below 5.5

Tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant are in. Have about 9 tomato seedlings left over. Planted in the rain because I lifted a tomato up and about 5 inches of roots were sticking out of the bottom. Easter green beans got alittle cold damage but not too bad. Damn raccoon came back and enjoyed more strawberries.

Did you amend the soil before, and have to incorporate this after the bushes were planted? I suppose if not, I’ll have to get the soil right and then plant next season… which would be a bummer.

Everything survived the chilly weather. Watermelons are going in tomorrow morning. We had a decent yield last year and my little boy can’t wait to grow some more.

I added aged pine bark and peat moss, along with the sulfur, to the bulk garden mix from my garden center. I started preparing it before I planted in the fall. I did plant before the soil actually got below 5.5, but it was pretty close and falling. If you want to plant immediately I'd add aluminum sulfate, cause it's supposed to work instantly to acidify the soil. But I'd also add some elemental sulfur to bring it down longer term.

Same! I got everything else in yesterday afternoon, including my small yellow squash and zucchini seedlings, and sunflowers. I'm going to sow beans, cucumbers, and butternut this weekend.

It's on now!

Like Pillage said, Aluminum sulfate will drop the pH instantly. I use it for my gardenias any time they’re showing yellow leaves and whatnot. I also periodically add sulfur to the soil for gardenias, azaleas, and hydrangeas. I did the same for my blueberries.

Still surveying the damage, and not sure about three of my tomatoes. The leaves look dead, but the stalks are still robust and green. Can those come back or is there even any point?

I lost all of my tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and cantaloupe. Most I started from seeds. Man this hurts but it's a chance you take I guess.

RIP Midnight Snacks, Two Tasties, LA Red, Chocolate Sprinkles, and Aphrodite cantaloupe.

I’d just replace them at this point.

Thanks guys. I'm going to get one of those soil PH/moisture meters and prep w/ the Al sulfate then plant, and monitor and add sulfur as time goes by.

ETA: May get a change in order from my wife regarding strawberries, as we consume those more than blueberries. I currently do not have a spot for them. Do nurseries typically sell them towards the end of the season so they can be planted and somewhat established before the following Spring?

Here are a couple of photos of my modest setup for spring. I'm also going to figure a cucumber situation this weekend. Probably just going to get a galvanized trough and build some janky trellis. I'm skipping squash and zucchini this spring. Planting list:

Peppers:

2x Jimmy Nardello
1x Big Boy Jalapeno
1x Carmen
2x Escamillo
2x Costa Rican (one in a pot - plan to over winter)
1x Better Belle

Tomatoes:

1x Midnight Snack
1x Sungold
2x Big Beef
2x Cherokee Purple
4x Fred's Tie Dye

I couldn't get irrigation setup for the tomatoes yet because I only ordered half of the components I needed like an idiot. That, and staking/caging is one of my projects for this weekend.
