How often are y’all watering since it cooled.

I planted some pumpkins, cucumbers, pole beans, and squash from seed first week of august.
I also bought some tomato and bell pepper plants at the same time.
I moved everything into my new garden around last week of august.
My plants are still 2” tall and yellow with just a handful of leaves except for my zucchini. Zucchini is about 12” tall and have several flowers but I never see them open.

I’ve been watering everyday with a timer at 10am for 30 minutes. My bed is brand new and built out of 2x12 filled with garden soil from a local nursery.
Is my soil shite? Am I watering too much? Not enough? I’m so pissed.

My soil is moist but not wet. So I would think it’s perfect. I just started some miracle grow organically for vegetables so I’ll see if that helps.

With my drip tape I'm watering 4 days per week, 1 hour 15 minutes each time. Was watering every day when we were consistently in the 100s. And that timing is based on a calc I did using the flow rate of each drip and the spacing, and applying to the needs of the bed.

I’d maybe try watering for longer but less often. Maybe and hour every 2 or 3 days. They don’t need to stay wet. Let the soil dry a little. It’ll promote deeper root growth.

One of my eggplants has split due to the weight of the fruit. So I picked all the decent sized ones. Not sure what I’m going to do with 5 gals of eggplants.

This is what I do. The 1h 15m equates to 1 inch over the area of my bed. Once we're done with the 90s I'm going to reduce down to twice a week.

This! It freezes well, so you can make a large batch.

Also, eggplant and ground beef casserole is one of my favorites to make.

So after months of having just last year's fall leaves in a big pile, I finally took the time to layer them with a bunch of fresh grass clippings. 48 hours later and it's cooking!

So I reduced my timer to every 3 days. Now it has rained both days since I did it

Mother Nature ain’t got time for nobody’s plans.

I was out of town this weekend. So I went check out the garden when I got back home a little while ago. There’s more pumpkins growing than I can count. I’m not even sure what’s what. The only ones I can tell apart are the Captain Jack pumpkins because they are more oval shaped. I’m not even sure if any of the Gold Medal variety have set any fruit yet. I guess I’ll know if they grow really big.

I’ve counted at least 6 Captain Jack pumpkins and about 25 either Gold Medal or Sugar Pie. And that’s just what I can find…

These pumpkins grow quickly. A tale of 2 pumpkins…

Captain Jack #1 on Saturday vs today.

Captain Jack #2 on Saturday vs today.

I’m almost to the point where I can’t even get to #1 anymore cause the vines are growing like crazy around it. And there are others that I can only really see from a distance.

For those looking to do onion starts in your spring gardens, Dixondale Farms just restocked for winter ordering. These did fantastic for me this past year.

Is it bad that I water my plants for 20 minutes but do it frequently?

Bad? If the plants are fine then maybe it's not horrible, just not as ideal as watering more heavily but less frequently. That way water penetrates more deeply in the soil, doesn't dry out as quickly, and promotes deeper root growth.

The small ones, pumpkin pie. The large ones, Halloween decorations. If they make it in time.

How are everybody's fall tomatoes doing? I planted mine from cuttings at the beginning of August and they've only recently took off. They're about 6' tall and have a set a few fruits. Hopefully they are ready before a frost.

I left a cherry tomato plant in and it's started setting fruit like crazy again.

It's amazing what a small change in temps does for peppers. Both jalapenos and bells are going crazy right now.

I'm not doing any fall tomatoes. And I've ripped out all of my peppers except for jalapenos. The jalapenos are doing really well right now. They are loaded down!

I was in Lowes the other day and they had a ton of pumpkins out for sale. The small pie pumpkins were about $4.50 each! That's insane! I didn't even look to see how much they were selling the large sizes for. But I can about imagine. I remember buying large carving pumpkins for about $6 each years ago. Last year they were about $8 each.

Anyway, I often wonder if growing my own stuff is economically beneficial. Between seeds, fertilizer, and pest/disease treatments, I know I'm not in it that much money this fall (so far). Looking at the price of pumpkins I'd say it's definitely worth growing my own. Especially if I get enough use out of them.

Pretty sure I spend about $500 for every $0.27 of vegetables I produce.
