For you guys with manual reel mowers, how much effort does it take to keep them sharp and how often are you doing it? I am debating getting one for a ~1,600 ft section of our yard right off the back of our house.

I have seen a bunch of videos on backlapping and it seems like a PITA if you have to do it often. Are they overcomplicating things? I always assumed you could just pull the mower in reverse to make the blades turn the opposite way?

The first couple times you do it it will be a pain in the arse. Then you get the hang of it. During the growing season I cut the front one night and the back the next. So the whole yard is cut every other day. I bought the kit off of amazon that comes with the grit you have to paint on the blades. I sharpen them every two weeks and it takes 10 minutes.

Clover is starting to break through on me. I did spray atrazine about a month ago. What options do I have now? Celsius? I'm thinking I'll spray it on the patches, but not the whole lawn.

Msm or Celsius would do the trick.

Do you guys think Allyn Hane "The Lawn Care Nut" (youtube) gives sound advice and how do you feel about his suggestions about using things such as root growth stimulant?

You'll see people use it and report benefit from it. Personally, I don't think it helps as much as they would have you believe. Plenty of good looking lawns not using that stuff. Though on the flip side there are many golf courses etc that make this part of their routine.

With that said, it's not going to hurt...so just time and money if you choose to do it. It would probably the last thing I would do to help the lawn (proper soil amendments, npk apps, core aeration, etc etc all first)

Thinned out some tree limbs today.

Also looked at a couple of my dry spots my bermuda.

Found some decent size rocks just a few inches below the surface. Guess well see if tbay helps any at all.

I have a spot in the front that must have some concrete or something under the surface. It’s the first place my grass gets burnt and is always lighter green than the rest of the yard.

I’ve got all my weeds under control and have two issues to solve:

1) Bermuda sharing space with my centipede

2) a few dead / brown spots the running grass won’t catch

Can I still use the sym/ syn herbicide to kill Bermuda?

I put RGS down every month or so when i'm bored and feel like putting something on the yard.

Its hard to really say if it helps or not, but it certainly doesnt hurt. I've got it so i use it...

Thanks, current HOC is 5/8". Started this season at .415" but had to bump up because i've been travelling too much to stay on top of it.

Holding it here for another couple of weeks and then i'll scalp, aerate and sand level, then will stay below .5" for the rest of the year.

Currently using an Allett Liberty 43 with a 10 blade reel, and also have scarifier and veritcutter catridges

Nice. You happy with it? They've been showcasing their allett Stirling model on all of their recent vids. I might make the Splurge in 2-3 years and see who's offering what in the battery reel space. Or I'll get lazy and get a robotic mower.

Overall, yes. It does tend to wear belts quicker than i'd like however. Its an easy fix but i wish it were a tad more robust for how tough mowing and cultivating on bermuda can be.

I have a Stirling 51 on order, at face value you they have addressed many of the short comings of the liberty.

But yes, I am not displeased with the mower. Its the only mower that has been on this lawn since i laid it early last year, which shows the versatility of the machine.

Quick front yard mow.

Yard finally thickening up in my dry edges and color evening out with the rain we had last week. Manual reel 1inch. Getting some washboarding but I just accept that's part of having a manual reel mower.

Are you dealing with a lot of seed heads on your celebration? I'm having a ton but I had a lot last year around this time too.
