Ended up re-doing my trellis since it was collapsing under the weight of the cucumbers. The bamboo running across held up fine but was just too short so when it bent a little bit, it fell from where it was tied. Also the green bean poles couldn’t stand up.

I swapped the green poles with thicker wooden poles and put up a netting across the run. It looks much better and now my cucumbers aren’t trying to overtake my pepper and okra plants.

The Tabasco peppers are recovering nicely from getting ripped up by the wind. Should have my first peppers in a week or 2.

And my first couple of okra are popping up.

Better Boy tomatoes

One of my favorite. They’ve always mostly done well for me. I’ve struggled with them the past couple of years. Did the bush variety this year (Better Bush) and they are doing well and are equally delicious. It was a struggle fighting back disease on the better boy’s.

Buddy of mine mentioned to me to try Better Bush instead. I'll definitely go that route next year.

Garden looks great. I just started 4 more okra plants but have been steadily picking off the 4 I already have. Okra really are easy to grow here.

I’m flooded with tomatoes. Good problem to have I guess but lots of salsa being made. Plants are starting to show some bacterial spot/possible blight. I need to hit them with peroxide but man it’s hard to stay motivated when they’re fully grown and you’re over picking tomatoes haha.

Working on that now.

ETA: Same here with tomatoes. Best year in quite a while. Plants are loaded. The heat is starting to slow them down, though.

Between my chickens’ crap going in the compost pile and the ducks’ crap/bedding going straight into the garden, I should be set for a while.

I finally picked my first handful of cherry tomatoes. The cool weather we've had here has really stunted everything.

Peppers are finally starting to set well. Should have some Carmens and Jalapenos ready soon. My habanero and ghost are finally starting to get some good growth after basically sitting there for two months.

Pillage, do you or anyone else have some good pickle recipes you are willing to share? I seem to remember one being posted on this thread, but I haven't been able to find it. My cucumbers are finally beginning to produce, so I should have some for my first attempt at pickling.

Also, do y'all generally plant determinant or indeterminate tomatoes? I have done indeterminate the past two years, and it is just so much work trying to keep up with them. Mine are about 7-8 feet tall right now. Do y'all recommend just cutting the tops off to make them more manageable? It seems like the pictures that y'all are posting are of determinate, which look much easier to handle.

I plant indeterminate, determinate, and dwarf varieties. I agree that the indeterminate varieties become very difficult to deal with over time. I think my plantings next season are going to lean heavily towards the dwarf varieties. They only get 3'-4' tall so one cage is all that's needed, and they produce just as much if not more than the indeterminate varieties. They also taste better than hybrids.

Here are some photos of pickings over the last few days. Picked over 25 tomatoes just this morning and got a new winner in the biggest tomato column. Striped German at 22.3 ounces. I had another striped german that was bigger than this, but army worms/caterpillars got to it.

This has been my most productive tomato growing season ever by far. All of the varieties I planted have produced a ton.

Blue, where do you get your dwarf seeds from?

I've been ordering mine from here: Victory Seeds

My favorite variety is Fred's Tie Dye. I grew the New Big Dwarf variety this year too and I like it a lot. The Fred's variety produced bigger tomatoes in my garden, though.

Thanks. I might give them a shot next year. I grow my maters in raised beds, so the extra foot added to the already ridiculous heights the indeterminates get can be annoying to say the least.

I used to try different things, but I’ve gotten lazy.

I buy these at Super 1 or Walmarks. About $3 a pack and makes 7 quarts. The flavor is great and it makes my life much easier.

ETA:

A couple things I change or do different. I use 7 cups water and 4 cups vinegar. And I add a quarter teaspoon of calcium chloride to each jar.

Damn I had that same pack in my hands at market basket today when getting more jars but passed on it. I’ll try to remember next time to try it.

I’ve done the regular dill, kosher dill, spicy, and bread and butter. They’re all good. But the kosher dill stood out as my favorite. And I’m not a huge fan of sweet pickles, but the bread and butter was pretty darn good, too.

For every cup of vinegar I do one cup of water. I add salt to taste besides my other ingredients. When pickles are finally done, I'll taste one from each jar to see if the taste is where I want it to be. You can always add seasonings to the jars and it only takes a day or two for the pickles to take in the seasoning. You just can't take it back if you over season.

Yep. And for jalapeño and okra, too.
