I live in N.O. in the Mid-City area and getting oak leaves is never an issue for me. Just yesterday I scored 8 large trash bags full of them that would normally be heading to the dump. I put some in my compost pile, but the rest will be used between my rows after I lay down a layer of cardboard I've got from the local supermarkets. That helps with moisture retention and also keeps the weeds down. The side benefit is by the fall, all that stuff will be well decomposed and I'll just till it all under for my fall planting.

My big boys and celebrities are not doing well in this cold and then wind. But my sam marzanos are going nuts. This is first time Ive done sams by recommendation of a family member in another state. I hope they arent a cool weather tomato

I lost one of my San Marzanos to wind damage. That's my go to canning. I may have to replace it with a regular Roma.

Really? I've never seen it in the stores. Btw, you going to P&P tonight?

I planted 2 San Marzanos last year and had terrific results

I've filled up my pickup truck at that very place many times over the years. And before the police horse stables had to change their dumping of horse stall waste, I was getting all the stable waste from them I needed for my compost pile.

Use to cart it to the back of the property and just dump it but now they have to dump it in one of those towaway containers and every bit of trash goes in there now. So it's too hard to pick through.

I've been there before and they are often kind enough to use their little front end loader to fill my truck. I slip the guy a few bucks and I'm happy and he's happy. Besides, all they do is have it hauled off to be disposed of.

There's also a privately owned small stable on River Road right past Rivershack Tavern heading toward the Huey P. They take their stuff across the levee and dump it in the batture, but I think the patrol units that work that area would frown on me running my truck across the levee and bike path to access it. There's probably tons of it and the old stuff is surely composted very well and ready to use.
