What up everyone, 43 year old looking to get back to a better routine of working out. I’m not looking to get shredded or anything, but just try and do better and get in a healthier routine. I know diet is key, but for someone who is moderately active daily where would you start? More looking at do I go cardio or straight into light strength training or combo of both. Any insight appreciated.

Just trying to look better? Cut calories and lift heavy weights now while you figure out all the details.

Pick one goal and see if you can do it for two weeks.
Add a second goal for the next two weeks. If you can do both and it’s been a month, you are ready to get after it.
Some options:
Cut out sugar in drinks
Do cardio 5 times a week
Don’t eat heavy past 7 pm
Lift weights 4-5 times a week
Get 7-8 hours of sleep

Lift weights. Definitely lift weights.
Check out the thread below about the farmer's walk. That's a great idea for cardio.
Also, if you do start lifting, there's lots of information out there about starting a lifting regiment after 40. Check it out and it might help you get back in to shape without any injury setbacks.

Eat clean- eating clean seems to be the key for me.
No diet bars, stupid processed crap, etc.
Eggs, meat, rice, potatoes, salad, cottage cheese, ya know…the good stuff with fruits, and vegetables and it seems to make all the difference in the world for me.

best bang for your buck is going to be lifting, i suggest realyl lifting as in a LP program like greyskull, stronglifts or starting strength.
Get stronger
get in a small caloric deficit when it comes to diet
for cardio, just do 5-10 hard min after lifting sessions.

Alcohol’s not doing anybody any favors either.

I disagree. Should you eat them all the time? No. But life comes at you fast - there good in a pinch.

Whenever I fall off and try to get back to healthy habits I find setting and accomplishing smaller, shorter term goals keeps me motivated. I try to take baby steps as well. I'll change 1 meal or routine at a time instead of just jumping all in at once. Make sustainable changes instead of crash diets.
Edit: go right in to light lifting

any other info? what does getting back into a routine mean for you? do you want to look better? do you want a little more strength? do you just want to maintain a better overall health? Do you want to gain visible muscle or is that not important to you?
