Started doing BJJ; I feel like I’m getting a full body workout and huffing at the end. Can anyone say if this type of a workout translates to improving your running at all?

It’s great conditioning

Lots of workouts you can do to help improve run times without putting that constant pounding on the road

But at the end of the you still need to log those miles

It will get you in good cardio shape. Running takes your legs being adapted to running though, too.

It will be vastly better than nothing for running, but also not necessarily directly carry over.

Essentially, helpful, but still need the miles. Check. Thanks guys.

On another note, my entire body is sore as frick. Not sure how that will translate to muscle mass/leanness, but it’s doing something

What do you think about BJJ? I’m assuming that you’re relatively new to it, I really want to sign up and still remember watching Royce Gracie in UFC 1 with my dad and thinking how much fun it would be to do that but I really don’t even know what to expect

Great aerobic workout
Add judo as well. (Real randori is anaerobically) exhausting

I've only been doing it a couple months, but I'm definitely enjoying the cardio aspect to it. I leave drenched. There's also a mental aspect that I'm still working on, but getting better at. It's about understanding all the options you have available , all the options your opponent/partner has, and then understanding when to exert energy and when to defend/rest. That part is actually becoming much more fun the more I learn.

I will say I definitely feel more....confident? I dunno how to describe it. I don't go looking around for fights, but it feels good knowing I know how to handle myself. I already had an ok standup game, but this really boosts my confidence if something went to the ground.

Jiu Jitsu regularly + proper dieting can and will lower you bodyfat percentage a ton. It won't increase your muscle mass very much but that's what weights are for. Or instead of getting leaner, it can help counter poor diet choices and beer drinking.

The soreness every session or most sessions will eventually subside and you'll get to the point that you can roll 5+ hard rounds 5+ days a week without experiencing chronic muscle soreness. This is good for skill improvement but terrible for joint health and it's a big contributor to the fact that virtually everyone in BJJ with 5+ years of experience has mangled hands and minor to moderate back issues. Chronic issues with other body parts are common but not nearly as universal as hands and back.

IMO those things are overwhelmingly countered by the enjoyment of the sport, and the fact that if you enjoy it you can passively reap tremendous mental health and physical health benefits doing something fun on a consistent basis.

Do you believe any of those back issues you mentioned can be mitigated with a good back regiment in the gym (deadlift, pull-ups, back extensions, etc)?

5 hard rounds? Most I’ve ever done at the end of practice is 3, seven minute, rounds and that was miserable. You must be a beast. Seriously.

Been rolling for 10+ years. After a ruptured disc in C2, a couple of bruised ribs, a broken nose, and no telling how many sprains, bruises, and eye gouges I kind of limit myself these days.

BJJ is a young man’s game. Especially in the lower belts. High level guys don’t seem to cause nearly as many injuries.

Anyone know of a place in Baton Rouge that also stresses judo along with jiu jitsu?

I’ll ask about BR, but if you’re ever in CO, got you covered. Local program is doing big things.
