Running cardio and jiujitsu are two different things. Jiujitsu cardio is like interval sprint conditioning. I am a jiujitsu practitioner. Building your gas tank is a never ending process.

There really is no substitute for jits cardio besides getting on the mat and actually rolling. Most new guys run out of gas because they don't know how to breath right. They get on the mat and are so worried about technique, not getting tapped, or trying to tap the other guy that they forget all about their wind.
We like to slow roll sometimes where we just flow without even worrying about submissions. It's usually upper level belts that do this since the average White Belt is to ate up with going full tilt all the time. It takes all the pressure out of it and you can focus on actually working on proper breathing techniques and then working on your game at the same time.

Hey guys, sorry I am just now seeing this or I would have chimed in earlier. My name is Josh Mancuso and I own JM Modern Jiu Jitsu in Baton Rouge.
As far as cardio from jiu jitsu. It's a different type of cardio than running and jumping. I have extremely good muscle endurance. So while I can't run long distances without wanting to die, I can explode decently well for an older guy and I am very durable due to the amount of training I put myself through. I have a very strong static strength. I would say that most all BJJ practitioners would have the cardio to do any sport they want well. Obviously the training would need to be tailored to that other sport for maximum results but I think you get the point.
Physically over the last 13 years my body went from a very squishy 5'9" 205Lb body to around now in the upper 170lb range with a BF% of around 8.5%. This is from only BJJ training, I never lifted weights consistently, I just always got really bored with it. But I do try to eat healthy for 85% of my meals. And I rarely drink anymore.
Lifting weights, running, tennis, whatever. It's all going to be great for you physically if you keep showing up. Which is why people like BJJ. It's actually fun, challenging, and a social experience every time.

I can vouch for my long time buddy Josh here, great guy and legit dedication to BJJ.
I'm unable to join his gym since I'm in Illinois, but he's rec'd me a guy up here that I'll be checking out if I ever get the chance
