I’m approaching 40 and for the last few weeks I’ve found myself dreading going to the gym. When I do go, I find myself talking more than lifting and throwing in a set here and there with zero intensity. I still manage to eat well and get cardio in but I can’t get myself up to lift anymore. I don’t have any lingering pain so I’m pretty sure it’s all psychological. Is it natural to care less about the way you look and more about overall health as you age? I used to live in the gym and now I rather spend an hour walking the dog or riding a bike. Any tips appreciated

I go through spurts like that a couple of times a year. I’m 41 and for a few weeks I just lose all of my motivation. Then I wake up one morning and I’m crushing it again. It just comes and goes for me. I try a new playlist, mix up my routine work new movements, etc. That always helps.

Anything is better than nothing. The majority of people do nothing. Get a fitness tracker. Seeing results on the app can be motivating.

If you are still moving around, then you are ahead of a lot of people. Family is my motivation. I want to be strong and healthy for them as long as I can be. I want to be involved with them, not just watching from the sidelines.

well worrying about overall health should mean you also worry about strength, since strength training is imperative to overall health, especially as we age

that doesn't mean you have to be lifting heavy, but some form of strength training is necessary

Pound some caffeine, throw on some headphones and kill it.

Preworkout powder, Bang or Reign if you’re really struggling. Monster for just a boost.

I will also throw in that as we age our muscles will break down and eventually we won’t be able to grow them any longer. Build all the muscle while we can. We can shed fat later.

I’m probably over caffeinated at this point. I don’t have any issues with being active. I just have zero want to move any weights around and I know it’s more beneficial than taking a random jog. I’ll go to the gym and somewhere around my third or fourth set start to lose all interest in why I’m there and start shooting the shite with people. Before I know it, I’ve been there an hour and really havent done anything. I’m a fairly introverted person so for me to get sidetracked so easily with conversation, that pretty much tells me I have no interest in being there.

If you are not following a proven lifting program, do that ASAP. Second, its ok to have rough gym days or even weeks, especially as you get older. When it hits me I focus on 2 things, getting to the gym and finishing my main progression lift for the day. I've had many gym days, sometimes due to lack of time, others due to lack of interest, where I've warmed up, knocked out three sets of deadlifts or squats (I've mostly done 531 style workouts) and rolled out in 25 or 30 minutes. But I got it in, and I have something in the log to measure to previous workouts.

Take a week or two off. Natural to get burnt out.

Group workout classes have been great for me not to mention yoga pants as well.

A new app to track your lifting is great. I’ve used the MapMyRun app since 2013. I put all of my workouts in it, reps, weights, and compete against myself weekly. Keeps me going as well.

Are you not listening to music with headphones? Go to dinner if you want to chat. Go to the gym if you want to exercise.

I’m one of those old school guys who’s never worn headphones But I’ve never had a problem focusing on my routine and not getting caught up chatting. That’s how I know the motivation has completely left me.

Change your routine up. Think of some goals, right them down, take a week off and then go after those goals using a new program.

How are you currently lifting?

I dont have much of a routine anymore. Between work and kids, my gym routine has turned into going whenever that window opens. I used to look forward to those openings, now when they come I don’t have the want to knock out a workout. I might just be burnt out from everything. My goal right now is to not fall into the trap of just letting myself go because life is busy.

That’s your problem. I was the same way. You need motivation for every exercise and it starts over each time. I’m strict about a program now and I do what my watch tells me when it tells me. No thoughts. I don’t have to make any decisions so there’s no chance for my brain to trick me into slacking.

like oyster said, thats your problem.

I highly suggest you look at the ppsa oak tree program. Its 20 days of training, designed to be run however your schedule allows. if you can only do 2 per week, thats 10 weeks of training, go 7 days that week.....allows for almost 3 weeks...etc etc

Will give you something to follow but allows you the flexibility it sounds like you need.

also most of the other PPSA programs can be run like that, hell most programs can be. Just look at it as a section of workouts, if it takes you 8 weeks to finish... oh well.

nothing special about the 7 day week.

My gf had the same issue. She could never go with me to the gym or find time bc of kids and work. We found a solution. Instead of going at 6 pm like I used to go, we sucked it up and we go at 5 am every morning. That means we’re up at 4:30 every day. It’s hard af to get out of bed but once I’m at the gym, I’m fine and good to go. It works for both of us and she never misses a day or has to find openings, and neither do I now.
