I’ve been running since March and it has benefited me greatly, I’m down to 170 and have never felt better. We recently had a newborn and finding the opportunity to run has become a little problematic at times. I’ve considered joining a fitness center that offers daycare in the evenings and just run on the dreadmill. I’ll be 40 this year so I’m not looking to get faster or anything, mostly just maintain my current overall fitness level and health. Does the treadmill offer the same cardiovascular and health benefits as running outdoors? TIA

Get a heart rate monitor. Measure your heart rate on your outdoor runs, then just try to keep it in that same zone on the treadmill. From a cardio perspective, that's going to give you the same affect.

Pacing on the treadmill is pretty random as treadmills vary greatly. But in any case, if I have the same leg turnover and stride length on a treadmill, it's going to be easier than running on the road. So rule of thumb is typically to bump up the incline to 1 or 1.5 to make up for that difference.

Yes, the only main negative side effects of the treadmill compared to outdoor running is that it is boring af and it shortens your stride length considerably.

Outside is better and more relaxing due to scenery. Get a good jogging stroller and bring the little one.

As others have said, it’s just boring. On a positive note, most fitness centers have monitors on the treadmills and it is much easier to maintain a pace. I often slack a bit when running outdoors. That is a blessing and a curse because sometimes I run faster outdoors, depending on the day, without restrictions of the treadmill setting my pace.

I will elliptical before I treadmill. I hate treadmills with a passion. Completely unnatural running stride to me.

That beings said, cardio is the same.

running on the treadmill isn't really running when it comes down to it

and if you spend a ton of time on a treadmill and then try and run that same distance on the pavement you open yourself up to running injuries

but a treadmill can be used as a tool to get pacing down

I've read it doesn't work out the posterior chain nearly as much as running on the ground.
