Nothing wrong with getting some of that work during the saturday group ride. adding in a threshold training session is a good start.

and you almost doubled your volume. totally normal to feel kinda smoked. you probably need a real recovery ride more than low zone 2.

Have you done a proper test so you have a threshold number to work off of?

220 in October, 2024

I’ve logged a lot of workouts and miles since then. I bumped my Zwift FTP setting to 230 at the beginning of March. I’ll probably run another FTP test in the next 2-3 weeks.

Sounds good!

Threshold work sucks, but it makes you stronger.

Start with something like 5x5 and work your way up to 2x20.

Race cancelled this weekend. Too much rain.

I did VO2 Max intervals yesterday morning.

I stopped by the LBS yesterday and talking to the owner who is also a coach. He looked at my training and said my VO2 Max wasn’t really getting into VO2 Max despite what Zwift says and gave me some VO2 workouts for 3 weeks (2x week) and said we’d look at some sweet spot and threshold workouts after he sees how I handle pure Zone 2 and pure VO2 Max for 3 weeks (excluding Saturday group rides).

I think I need this, too, and I think you’re right: having looked at my numbers I’ll have to start incorporating structured threshold and sweet spot work in to make the gains I want to make.

bummer...

lemme ask you, why such an emphasis on v02?

dont take what i'm saying the wrong way, but what you're doing right now doesnt make a ton of sense to me.

you just almost doubled your training time (which is awesome) and real v02 work is going to introduce a ton of fatigue that you arent really benefitting from at this point, if you can actually finish it. I only say if you can finish it because real v02 intervals are hard AF and if you arent deep into this you will have a hard time finishing those intervals. the bike shop guy is probably right that you arent really getting into real v02.

you need to continue to build a base with you zone 2 work and really start to focus on adding in some sweet spot and threshold to get stronger. only then would i be doing v02 work, and at the level you're at I'd only do 1 v02 session a week. remember, everything contributes to your v02 max, not just straight up v02 intervals.

if i do 2 real 5x5 v02 sessions @415w in a week i'm going to really feel it and i'll have to recover. just those 2 sessions would dictate how i could train for the rest of the week to a degree

Polarized training model.

Don't worry-I'm here seeking constructive criticism. I realize I can't get better without looking at the experience other more seasoned riders have. I'm still new and learning, and I appreciate the advice.

fair enough. it's a proven approach so i'm not going to tell you it's wrong. just manage your recovery so the v02 sessions aren't affecting the rest of the week negatively. i tend to gravitate more toward pyramidal.

Just 30 minutes tonight on the trainer. Going for a bike ride as you would say. Legs just felt dead. Going to get some rest tonight, hit a little ride tomorrow, and save the rest for Saturday’s group ride.

I get it.

I think I’ve just overtrained for my cycling fitness level and combined with gym work, my quads are just shot.

The trainer is a necessary evil. No more, no less.

Back on the road bike tomorrow. Broken hand be damned. Rode around the neighborhood earlier to make sure i could pull the front brake. I’ll be avoiding bumpy stuff but should be fine

So what car racks are all of you using? We've got two adult and two 24" kids bikes that we need to be able to travel with. The SUV has a standard 2" hitch.

Trek Dual Sport 3
Townie 7D step-thru
Trek PreCaliber 24
Trek PreCaliber 24

The Trek shop we use is recommending a Kuat Transfer V2. Any experience or recommendations? Ideally we'd like to stay under $1k but want to make sure they are secure.

I've had a Kuat Sherpa, a previous Rocky Mounts, and currently have a Kuat Transfer v2 single-bike.

I can speak that Kuat makes quality racks. I'd buy one of them before Rocky Mounts, but RM does make a good rack too. I just find the Kuats to be a bit more refined. Both equally secure.

I didn't know the transfer had a 4 bike configuration, but if it does then that's your best bet given your budget.

Thanks for the feedback. They make a 3 bike rack and have a single bike add-on accessory to make it 4.

I have the kuat NV2.0 with a single add on to go to 3 bikes. It’s built like a tank. I love it.

Get on it.

I skipped Friday. My legs felt beat up. I did over 100 miles on Saturday. I hid in the draft for a lot of it because my legs just didn’t feel up to it, but I gritted through a couple good pulls.

On vacation this week and brought my old bike along. I think I’ll just do 2-3 rides this week and hit some dumbbell HIIT and runs. My legs are rough.

Did 3hrs on the road bike yesterday morning. Had to favor the hand a bit but was fine as long as i didnt smoke a pothole etc. probably be another week before riding anything offroad

Hell yea, keep fitting in those long rides with all the training you’ve been doing and you’re going to start seeing some changes. Enjoy the vaca

Anything more than 2 bikes and I prefer the upright style bike racks. Normal 4 bike racks are so freaking LONG sticking way out of the back. I have a Velocirax 5 bike rack and love it. It's heavy though, about 100lbs just for the rack. Use a Kuat for a 2 bike rack no complaints.

Has anyone ever used a 1UP rack? I'm looking at one of those (along with a Kuat). My current bike-carrying method is suboptimal.
